Why IGI
Working with Shay House businesses
We built the service around what business owners in places like Shay House actually complain about: not knowing what the accountant will charge, finding out about a deadline after it has passed, and receiving a set of accounts with no explanation. Each is fixed by design: fixed fees, deadline tracking shown on every page, and a plain-English summary with every draft for Shay House clients.
Online only, UK based. There is no office in Shay House to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.
Continuity matters in self assessment tax returns: the person who prepared last year's work for your Shay House business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Shay House clients know the fee for self assessment tax returns before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

Worth knowing
Rules that affect most businesses here
Director's loan accounts
Money taken from a company has to be something: salary, dividend, expense reimbursement or loan. If it is a loan and remains outstanding nine months after the year end, the company pays tax at the dividend higher rate on it until it is repaid. Clearing the balance with a properly declared dividend before the deadline, where reserves allow, is routine year-end work.
Confirmation statements and identity verification
The confirmation statement is the annual check that the public register is right: officers, registered office, SIC codes, shareholders and the PSC register. It carries a £50 fee and no financial penalty for lateness, but failure to file leads to compulsory strike-off. The identity verification regime introduced in November 2025 has added a further check to every statement.
CIS deductions
Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from a registered subcontractor's labour invoices, or 30% if unregistered, and pay it to HMRC. The subcontractor reclaims the deductions against their actual tax through Self Assessment, usually producing a refund because deductions are on turnover while tax is on profit. Contractors file a monthly return by the 19th.
Record keeping
HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.
Allowable expenses
The expenses sole traders most often miss are home working costs, claimed by actual proportion or HMRC's flat rate, the business share of phone and internet, mileage at 45p for the first 10,000 business miles, and training that maintains existing skills. The ones most often claimed wrongly are commuting, entertaining customers and clothes that could be worn outside work.
Questions
Questions from Shay House
How quickly do you respond?
In UK working hours, usually within a few hours and always the same working day. Each Shay House client has a named contact who knows the file. Outside working hours, WhatsApp and email messages are picked up first thing the next morning. In January and at other peak times we tell you your turnaround when you book rather than leaving you guessing.
Are your fees inclusive of everything?
Our fee covers the work described for the package. Companies House fees, such as £100 to incorporate or £50 for a confirmation statement, are charged separately and passed on at cost. Software subscriptions are in your own name. There is nothing else: no hourly extras, no charge for questions, and no additional year-end invoice for Shay House clients on monthly packages.
What if my Shay House business is a partnership or an LLP?
Both are covered. Partnerships need a partnership return and a Self Assessment for each partner; LLPs file accounts with Companies House under company-style rules as well. We quote a fixed fee for the set based on the number of partners or members, and the process is the same as for any other client in Shay House: records in, draft out, approve, filed.
Do you work with businesses in Yorkshire that are not in Shay House itself?
Yes. Every place in Yorkshire has its own page on this site and the same fees apply throughout. The nearest-places list on this page links to them. Wherever in England your business is based, the service is identical because none of it depends on where you are.
Which deadlines matter most for self assessment tax returns?
The next four dates that apply to self assessment tax returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Shay House clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
How do I get started from Shay House?
Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for self assessment tax returns. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Shay House clients are set up within a day.
