Registered office address change
A company's registered office is the address on the Companies House register at which official documents are served and official post is sent. It can be changed at any time by filing form AD01, free of Companies House fees, and the change takes effect when it is registered, usually within a working day. The new address must be in the same jurisdiction as the company's incorporation, England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and since 4 March 2024 it must be an appropriate address: one where a document delivered would be expected to come to the attention of a person acting for the company and where delivery can be acknowledged. A PO box alone does not qualify, and Companies House can move a non-compliant company to a default address and start strike-off if the position is not corrected.

In detail
How registered office address change works
Companies change their registered office for ordinary reasons: moving premises, leaving an accountant or formation agent whose address they had been using, or replacing a director's home address with something that is not published. The last is the commonest. A home address used as the registered office is on the public record permanently and searchably, and most directors prefer otherwise once they realise. Changing the registered office does not change the directors' own service addresses, which are separately published, so our £49 package files the AD01 and the CH01 for each director together, leaving no home address visible on the register. Historic filings showing a residential address can be suppressed on application to Companies House, and we explain the process.
The change should be made promptly whenever the old address stops being reliable, because everything that matters arrives there: Companies House reminders and penalty notices, HMRC letters including enquiries and determinations, and court documents, which are treated as served on the company when delivered to the registered office. A former accountant has no duty to forward post indefinitely, and may file to remove their address themselves, in which case Companies House moves the company to a default address that must then be corrected. For fourteen days after a change registers, documents may still be validly served at the old address, so post arrangements there should continue for at least that long.
The filing is the short part. HMRC's records for Corporation Tax, VAT and PAYE are separate from Companies House and are not all updated automatically. Banks, payment providers, insurers, the pension provider, suppliers and customers need the new address. The website, business letters, invoices, emails and order forms must show the current registered office, which the law requires regardless of where the business trades from. Where the company's statutory registers are kept at the registered office and are moving, or are being moved to a single alternative inspection location, a further filing applies. We provide the checklist in order with each filing, so the change is complete rather than merely registered.
Our £29 fee covers checking the new address against the jurisdiction and appropriate-address rules, the board resolution, the AD01 filed online and the records updated. The £49 package adds the directors' and secretary's service addresses. The £129 first-year package moves the company to our own registered office service, with the change filed for us and official post scanned to you the same day it arrives, renewing at £69 a year. LLPs follow the same process on their own forms at the same fees. Everything is handled online and nothing is filed until the company has approved the new address.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
CIS deductions
The Construction Industry Scheme affects both sides of a construction payment. Contractors must verify subcontractors, deduct the right amount, issue statements and file monthly, with penalties from £100 for each late return. Subcontractors suffer deductions on turnover and recover the excess at the year end. Limited company subcontractors offset deductions against PAYE monthly instead.
Confirmation statements and identity verification
Every company must file a confirmation statement at least once a year, within fourteen days of its review date, with a £50 Companies House fee. Since November 2025 directors and people with significant control must also verify their identity with Companies House, and the confirmation statement is where existing officers confirm they have done so during the transition year.
Payments on account
A common surprise in Self Assessment is the January payment that is far larger than expected. That is the balancing payment for the year just ended plus the first payment on account for the year ahead, which HMRC sets at half of the bill just calculated. We put the figure in your hands months ahead and tell you how to adjust it legitimately when circumstances change.
The Self Assessment calendar
Four dates govern Self Assessment: 5 October to register, 31 October for paper returns, 31 January to file online and pay, and 31 July for the second payment on account. Missing the January date triggers an automatic £100 penalty before any tax is even considered, so we treat it as the fixed point around which the rest of the year is planned.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
The biggest change to Self Assessment in a generation is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, now live for higher-earning sole traders and landlords and arriving for the rest in stages. Quarterly updates are due by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, built from digital records. The practical consequence is that spreadsheet-and-shoebox bookkeeping is ending for anyone above the threshold.
Late filing penalties
Penalties are the clearest reason to work to deadlines. A Self Assessment return one day late costs £100 regardless of whether any tax is due; three months late adds £10 a day. Late company accounts start at £150 and reach £1,500, and double if the previous year was also late. None of this is negotiable afterwards except through a narrow reasonable-excuse appeal.
Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief
Since April 2023 there have been two Corporation Tax rates, 19% small profits and 25% main, with marginal relief smoothing the transition between £50,000 and £250,000 of profit. The band is where planning matters: each pound of profit in it is taxed at an effective 26.5%, so pension contributions and capital expenditure timed to keep profit below £50,000 are worth more than they look.
Questions
Registered Office Address Change: your questions answered
Is there a Companies House fee to change the registered office?
No. Form AD01 is filed free online using the company's authentication code and the change usually registers within 24 hours. Our fee of £29 is the total cost for the change alone. Director service address changes on CH01 are also free of Companies House fees.
Can I move the registered office anywhere in the UK?
Only within the jurisdiction of incorporation. A company registered in England and Wales must keep its registered office in England or Wales; a Scottish company in Scotland; a Northern Irish company in Northern Ireland. A company cannot change jurisdiction by moving its registered office.
What makes an address appropriate?
Since 4 March 2024 the registered office must be an address where a document delivered would be expected to come to the attention of someone acting for the company, and where delivery can be acknowledged. A PO box alone does not qualify. Companies House can move a company with a non-compliant address to a default address and begin strike-off if it is not corrected.
When does the change take effect?
When Companies House registers the AD01, usually within a working day of filing. For 14 days after registration, documents may still be validly served at the old address, so arrangements for post at the old address should continue for at least that period.
What is the difference between the registered office and a service address?
The registered office is the company's official address. A service address is each director's or secretary's own public contact address, which can be the registered office or elsewhere. Changing the registered office does not automatically change the directors' service addresses; our £49 package changes both together so no home address is left on the register.
Who else needs to know the new address?
HMRC for Corporation Tax, VAT and PAYE, which are separate records; your bank and payment providers; insurers; pension provider; suppliers and customers; Companies House-facing documents such as your website, letterhead, invoices and emails which must show the registered office. We provide the checklist with the filing.
Can I use my accountant's address or a service address?
Yes, provided the provider agrees and the address is monitored. Our registered office service at £69 a year does exactly this, with official post scanned to you the same day. The £129 first-year package includes the service and the AD01 filing.
What if I have left my previous accountant and the registered office is still there?
Change it immediately. The former accountant has no obligation to forward post indefinitely, and Companies House and HMRC letters, including penalty notices and strike-off warnings, will go there. If the former accountant has filed to remove the address themselves, Companies House may have moved you to a default address, which must be corrected.
Do the articles need to say where the registered office is?
No. Modern articles do not specify the address, and the registered office is recorded only at Companies House. Very old articles occasionally state a location, which may need amending by special resolution, and we check.
Does moving the registered office affect my tax or legal position?
Not in itself. Corporation Tax and VAT are unchanged. The address determines where documents are served and where the company's statutory registers are kept or recorded as being kept, which may itself need a filing (AD02/AD03) if the registers move to a single alternative inspection location.
How quickly can you file?
The same working day the company approves the new address, once we have confirmed it qualifies. Companies House normally registers the change within 24 hours. There is no statutory deadline for choosing to move, but once the old address is no longer available the change should be made at once.
Can I change the registered office of an LLP?
Yes, on form LL AD01, with the same rules on jurisdiction and appropriate address. Members' service addresses are changed on LL CH01. Our fees are the same as for companies.
