What we do for Gress and what it costs

The eight core services below each have a page for Gress; specialist and advisory services are delivered nationally and are listed further down. Every fee is fixed and confirmed in writing before work starts.

Why IGI

Working with Gress businesses

We built the service around what business owners in places like Gress actually complain about: not knowing what the accountant will charge, finding out about a deadline after it has passed, and receiving a set of accounts with no explanation. Each is fixed by design: fixed fees, deadline tracking shown on every page, and a plain-English summary with every draft for Gress clients.

We explain self assessment tax returns in the words Gress business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

Nothing is filed for Gress until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Gress to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in Scotland; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Worth knowing

Rules that affect most businesses here

Dormant companies

A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.

The trading and property allowances

Not every small income needs a tax return. The trading allowance exempts the first £1,000 of self-employment or casual income and the property allowance does the same for rental income, each measured on gross receipts. They cannot be combined with rent-a-room relief on the same income, and claiming the allowance means giving up the expense deduction for that source.

Employer National Insurance

The cost of an employee is more than the salary. Employer National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 a year, the 3% minimum pension contribution, holiday pay, equipment and management time all come on top. The Employment Allowance of £10,500 reduces the National Insurance for most employers with more than one person on the payroll.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Every employer must assess its workers for automatic enrolment from the first employee's start date. Those aged 22 to State Pension age earning over £10,000 a year must be enrolled into a qualifying pension with minimum contributions of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% from the employer, and a declaration of compliance made to the Pensions Regulator within five months.

Record keeping

HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.

Questions

Questions from Gress

Can you deal with HMRC and Companies House for me?

Yes. Once you authorise us as your agent, HMRC and Companies House correspond with us about the filings we make for your Gress business, and we can see your accounts and respond on your behalf. Authorisation is free and takes a few days to activate. Routine correspondence about work we have filed is handled at no extra charge.

I already have an accountant in Gress. How hard is it to switch?

It takes about two weeks and costs nothing extra. You authorise us, we write to your current accountant for professional clearance and your records, and we transfer the agent authorisations. We pick up the next filing without a gap. You do not need to wait for a year end, and we tell you honestly if switching mid-job would be awkward.

Which services are available in Gress?

Every service on this page is available to businesses and individuals in Gress, at the fee shown. Core compliance work, accounts, tax returns, bookkeeping, VAT, payroll and company formation, is listed with its own local page. Specialist services such as R&D, crypto tax and HMRC enquiry support are national services delivered the same way from anywhere in the UK.

Why are the fees the same in Gress as in London?

Because the cost of an accountant is mostly premises and that is a cost we do not have. The work is done online by UK-based staff, so a client in Gress pays exactly the published fee, as does a client in central London or a Highland village. The fee is confirmed in writing before anything starts.

Which deadlines matter most for self assessment tax returns?

The next four dates that apply to self assessment tax returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Gress clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.

How do I get started from Gress?
