Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Confirmation statements and identity verification
Every company must file a confirmation statement at least once a year, within fourteen days of its review date, with a £50 Companies House fee. Since November 2025 directors and people with significant control must also verify their identity with Companies House, and the confirmation statement is where existing officers confirm they have done so during the transition year.
CIS deductions
Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from a registered subcontractor's labour invoices, or 30% if unregistered, and pay it to HMRC. The subcontractor reclaims the deductions against their actual tax through Self Assessment, usually producing a refund because deductions are on turnover while tax is on profit. Contractors file a monthly return by the 19th.
Late filing penalties
HMRC's penalties for a late Self Assessment return are automatic: £100 the day after 31 January, £10 a day from three months late up to £900, then the greater of £300 or 5% of the tax at six and twelve months. Interest and separate late-payment penalties apply to the tax itself. Companies House charges £150 to £1,500 for late accounts, doubling for a second consecutive year.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, extends to those over £30,000 in April 2027 and is planned for £20,000 in April 2028. It requires digital records in compatible software and four quarterly updates to HMRC each year, with a final declaration replacing the traditional return. Payment dates are unchanged.
The Self Assessment calendar
The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Anyone new to Self Assessment must register by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which their untaxed income began. The online return and the balancing payment are due by 31 January, with a second payment on account on 31 July where they apply. Paper returns have an earlier deadline of 31 October and are rarely sensible.
Payments on account
If your Self Assessment bill exceeds £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax was collected at source, HMRC asks for two advance payments towards the following year, each half of the current bill, due 31 January and 31 July. The first year this happens the January payment is effectively one and a half times the bill. We model it in advance and show you how to reduce the payments if income is falling.
Salary versus dividends
The salary-and-dividend split is the central planning decision for an owner-managed company. Salary costs employer National Insurance above £5,000 but is deductible; dividends are not deductible but attract lower personal rates and no National Insurance. The optimum changes each April with the thresholds and depends on the director's other income, so it should be set deliberately every year.
Questions
CIS Tax Returns questions from Warwick
Can my CIS deductions be set against my VAT or other taxes?
For sole traders, no; CIS deductions are credited against your income tax and Class 4 National Insurance through Self Assessment, with the excess refunded. For companies, deductions are offset against PAYE and CIS owed, and the remaining balance is repaid by HMRC after the year end or, on request, set against Corporation Tax.
I have not filed for several years. Can you catch me up?
Yes. Late Self Assessment returns can be filed for the last four tax years to reclaim CIS deductions, and HMRC will offset refunds against any penalties. We quote a fixed fee for the set based on the number of years and reconcile each year's statements. The sooner this is done the more years remain claimable.
How does the VAT reverse charge affect CIS work?
Since March 2021, where both parties are VAT and CIS registered and the supply is within the scheme, the subcontractor does not charge VAT; the contractor accounts for it on their own return. The invoice must state that the reverse charge applies. We check your sales and purchase invoices for this on every return.
Do I need to register for CIS?
Subcontractors should register so deductions are 20% rather than 30%; registration is free with HMRC or £49 through our service with your UTR sorted at the same time. Contractors must register before paying their first subcontractor. If you are both, both registrations are needed; our dual package is £99.
What is gross payment status and can I get it?
Gross status means contractors pay you in full with no deduction; you pay your tax through Self Assessment or Corporation Tax instead. You need a construction turnover of at least £30,000 (sole trader) or £30,000 per director for companies, a clean compliance record for the previous 12 months and a UK bank account. Our £199 service prepares and submits the application.
How does CIS work for a limited company subcontractor?
Deductions suffered by a company are not reclaimed through Self Assessment. They are offset against the company's own PAYE and CIS liabilities each month through the Employer Payment Summary, and any excess at the year end is reclaimed from HMRC in writing. The £49 CIS plus payroll bundle handles this monthly.
Do you have an office in Warwick?
No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Warwick and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for cis tax returns is the same in Warwick as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
Is cis tax returns in Warwick really the same price as elsewhere?
Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Warwick pays and what a client in any other part of England pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
