Why IGI
Why Greenock businesses file with IGI
No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Greenock clients know the fee for crypto tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.
We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Greenock get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.
We serve Greenock remotely by design: records by WhatsApp or email, drafts back for approval, filing electronic. The saving on premises is passed to you in the fee for crypto tax.
A named person handles your crypto tax from Greenock and knows the file, so you are not re-explaining your business to a different helpdesk each time.
We explain crypto tax in the words Greenock business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.
Nothing is filed for Greenock until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Scottish taxpayers pay income tax under six Scottish bands set by the Scottish Parliament, from the 19% starter rate through 20%, 21%, 42% and 45% to the 48% top rate, applied to non-savings income. Dividends and savings are taxed at UK rates, National Insurance and Corporation Tax are UK-wide, and property purchases pay Land and Buildings Transaction Tax.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Employer National Insurance
Since April 2025 employer National Insurance has been 15% on earnings above a £5,000 secondary threshold, a substantial increase for small employers. The Employment Allowance rose to £10,500 at the same time to soften it for the smallest businesses. Directors deciding their own salary weigh this cost against the Corporation Tax deduction a salary provides.
Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment
Every employer must assess its workers for automatic enrolment from the first employee's start date. Those aged 22 to State Pension age earning over £10,000 a year must be enrolled into a qualifying pension with minimum contributions of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% from the employer, and a declaration of compliance made to the Pensions Regulator within five months.
Dormant companies
A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.
The trading and property allowances
Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.
Crypto records and reporting
Most crypto holders have taxable events they do not recognise, because every swap is a disposal even when no pounds change hands. The computation requires the complete transaction history from every exchange and wallet, pooled by asset with HMRC's matching rules applied. Exchange-generated tax reports are frequently wrong because they cannot see transfers between a user's own wallets.
The 60-day property CGT return
Selling UK residential property that was not your main home for the whole period of ownership triggers a separate Capital Gains Tax return, due within 60 days of completion along with payment of the tax. This is in addition to the annual Self Assessment. The gain is taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income band, after the £3,000 annual exempt amount.
Record keeping
Good records are the difference between a quick enquiry and a long one. For the self-employed, five years after the filing deadline; for companies, six years from the year end; for VAT, six years. Photographs of receipts, PDF statements and software exports all count. The requirement is to keep records, not paper, and a well-organised cloud folder satisfies it.
Questions
Crypto Tax questions from Greenock
How far back do I need to go?
The pool cost of what you hold today depends on every purchase you have ever made, so the computation must start from your first transaction even if you only need to report recent years. If earlier years were under-reported, we quantify the position and advise on disclosure, which HMRC treats far more leniently than discovery.
What if I am a trader rather than an investor?
HMRC rarely accepts that an individual is trading in crypto; the bar is very high and the badges of trade must be met. If you are trading, profits are income and losses are trading losses. For almost everyone the capital gains treatment applies, and we tell you plainly which side of the line you are on.
What are the Capital Gains Tax rates and allowance?
The annual exempt amount is £3,000 for 2026/27. Gains above it are taxed at 18% within your basic rate band and 24% above it. Losses in the year are set against gains automatically, and unused losses can be carried forward indefinitely if claimed on a return within four years.
Is staking income a capital gain?
No. Rewards from staking, lending, liquidity provision and most DeFi protocols are income when received, taxed at your income tax rate on the sterling value that day, and reported as miscellaneous income unless your activity amounts to a trade. The tokens then enter your pool at that value for a later capital gain or loss.
Do I pay tax if I never cashed out to pounds?
Usually yes. Swapping one cryptoasset for another, spending crypto on goods or services, and gifting it to anyone other than a spouse are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, valued in sterling at the time. Only moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposal. Most people's taxable events are swaps, not sales for cash.
How are gains calculated with so many purchases at different prices?
HMRC requires pooling: all units of the same token form one section 104 pool with an average cost, except that disposals are first matched against purchases on the same day and then against purchases within the following 30 days. We apply these rules across your entire history, which is impossible to do accurately by hand at any volume.
Do you have an office in Greenock?
No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Greenock and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for crypto tax is the same in Greenock as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
Is crypto tax in Greenock really the same price as elsewhere?
Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Greenock pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
