Why IGI

What you get in Greenock

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Greenock clients know the fee for capital gains tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Greenock get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to capital gains tax.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Greenock to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in Scotland; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in capital gains tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Greenock business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Greenock comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.

You stay in control of capital gains tax: drafts go to Greenock clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

The VAT registration threshold

VAT registration is compulsory once taxable turnover in any rolling twelve-month period exceeds £90,000, or when you expect to exceed that in the next thirty days alone. The test is rolling, not by tax year, and includes zero-rated sales. Businesses regularly cross it without noticing, and late registration means accounting for VAT on sales where it was never charged to customers.

Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief

Since April 2023 there have been two Corporation Tax rates, 19% small profits and 25% main, with marginal relief smoothing the transition between £50,000 and £250,000 of profit. The band is where planning matters: each pound of profit in it is taxed at an effective 26.5%, so pension contributions and capital expenditure timed to keep profit below £50,000 are worth more than they look.

Salary versus dividends

Directors of their own companies usually take a salary at or just above the National Insurance thresholds, which keeps the year qualifying for State Pension and is deductible for Corporation Tax, with further income as dividends. Dividends above the £500 allowance are taxed at 10.75%, 35.75% and 39.35% by band and can only be paid from distributable profits after tax, with a minute and voucher each time.

Director's loan accounts

The most common tax problem in owner-managed companies is an overdrawn director's loan account: drawings taken during the year that were never declared as dividends or salary. The company faces a 35.75% charge on the balance outstanding nine months after the year end, and the director may have a benefit in kind. We review the account before every year end to clear it properly.

The Self Assessment calendar

Self Assessment runs on a fixed annual cycle. Registration by 5 October following the tax year, online filing and payment by 31 January, and a second instalment on 31 July for those making payments on account. The penalties for lateness are automatic and escalate monthly, which is why we file early and chase approvals well before the window closes.

Payments on account

Payments on account catch out most people in their second year of self-employment. HMRC assumes next year's tax will match this year's and collects half in January and half in July, in advance, on top of the balancing payment. If profits are dropping you can apply to reduce them, but reducing them too far attracts interest. We calculate the right figure rather than guessing.

Late filing penalties

Lateness is expensive in a way that compounds. For individuals, £100 immediately, then daily penalties, then percentage-based ones at six and twelve months, with interest running on unpaid tax throughout. For companies, Companies House penalties scale with delay and double on repeat, and HMRC adds its own for a late CT600. Filing on time is the cheapest tax planning there is.

Questions

Capital Gains Tax questions from Greenock

How do you work out gains on shares bought at different times?

Disposals are matched first to shares bought the same day, then to shares bought in the following 30 days, then to the section 104 pool, which holds all other shares of that class at their average cost. The same rules apply to funds and to crypto. We run the matching across your full history.

Can I use losses from previous years?

Yes, if they were claimed on a return within four years of the tax year in which they arose. Current-year losses are set against current-year gains first, even if that wastes the annual exemption; brought-forward losses are only used to the extent needed to bring gains down to the exemption. We check for unclaimed historical losses as standard.

What is business asset disposal relief?

Formerly entrepreneurs' relief: a reduced rate on gains from selling all or part of a trading business, or shares in a trading company where you held at least 5% and were an officer or employee for two years. The lifetime limit is £1 million. The rate rose to 14% in April 2025 and to 18% from April 2026. Our £299 service prepares and supports the claim.

I gave a property to my child. Is there tax?

Yes. Gifts to anyone other than your spouse or civil partner are disposals at market value, and the gain is taxable even though no money changed hands. The 60-day return applies to residential property. Gift relief can defer gains on business assets, but not on investment property. We value, compute and report the gift.

What are the Capital Gains Tax rates for 2026/27?

The annual exempt amount is £3,000. Gains above it are taxed at 18% to the extent they fall within your unused basic rate band and 24% above it, for all asset types including residential property. Gains qualifying for business asset disposal relief are taxed at 14% in 2025/26, rising to 18% from April 2026, on up to £1 million of lifetime gains.

What is the 60-day property return?

When a UK resident sells UK residential property and tax is due, they must file a return through HMRC's Capital Gains Tax on UK property service and pay the tax within 60 days of completion. This is separate from and in addition to the annual Self Assessment. Late filing penalties mirror Self Assessment: £100 immediately, then daily and tax-geared penalties.

Which deadlines matter most for capital gains tax?

The next four dates that apply to capital gains tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Greenock clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
