Why IGI

What you get in Goodmayes

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Goodmayes clients know the fee for crypto tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Goodmayes get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Goodmayes to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in crypto tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Goodmayes business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

We explain crypto tax in the words Goodmayes business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

Nothing is filed for Goodmayes until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

The Self Assessment calendar

Four dates govern Self Assessment: 5 October to register, 31 October for paper returns, 31 January to file online and pay, and 31 July for the second payment on account. Missing the January date triggers an automatic £100 penalty before any tax is even considered, so we treat it as the fixed point around which the rest of the year is planned.

Payments on account

If your Self Assessment bill exceeds £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax was collected at source, HMRC asks for two advance payments towards the following year, each half of the current bill, due 31 January and 31 July. The first year this happens the January payment is effectively one and a half times the bill. We model it in advance and show you how to reduce the payments if income is falling.

Late filing penalties

HMRC's penalties for a late Self Assessment return are automatic: £100 the day after 31 January, £10 a day from three months late up to £900, then the greater of £300 or 5% of the tax at six and twelve months. Interest and separate late-payment penalties apply to the tax itself. Companies House charges £150 to £1,500 for late accounts, doubling for a second consecutive year.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

The biggest change to Self Assessment in a generation is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, now live for higher-earning sole traders and landlords and arriving for the rest in stages. Quarterly updates are due by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, built from digital records. The practical consequence is that spreadsheet-and-shoebox bookkeeping is ending for anyone above the threshold.

The VAT registration threshold

VAT registration is compulsory once taxable turnover in any rolling twelve-month period exceeds £90,000, or when you expect to exceed that in the next thirty days alone. The test is rolling, not by tax year, and includes zero-rated sales. Businesses regularly cross it without noticing, and late registration means accounting for VAT on sales where it was never charged to customers.

Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief

Since April 2023 there have been two Corporation Tax rates, 19% small profits and 25% main, with marginal relief smoothing the transition between £50,000 and £250,000 of profit. The band is where planning matters: each pound of profit in it is taxed at an effective 26.5%, so pension contributions and capital expenditure timed to keep profit below £50,000 are worth more than they look.

Salary versus dividends

Paying yourself from a company involves two routes with different tax treatment. Salary through payroll is a company expense and builds a National Insurance record; dividends come from post-tax profit at lower personal rates. Undocumented drawings that are neither become director's loans, with a 35.75% section 455 charge if not repaid within nine months of the year end.

Questions

Crypto Tax questions from Goodmayes

How far back do I need to go?

The pool cost of what you hold today depends on every purchase you have ever made, so the computation must start from your first transaction even if you only need to report recent years. If earlier years were under-reported, we quantify the position and advise on disclosure, which HMRC treats far more leniently than discovery.

What if I am a trader rather than an investor?

HMRC rarely accepts that an individual is trading in crypto; the bar is very high and the badges of trade must be met. If you are trading, profits are income and losses are trading losses. For almost everyone the capital gains treatment applies, and we tell you plainly which side of the line you are on.

Do I pay tax if I never cashed out to pounds?

Usually yes. Swapping one cryptoasset for another, spending crypto on goods or services, and gifting it to anyone other than a spouse are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, valued in sterling at the time. Only moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposal. Most people's taxable events are swaps, not sales for cash.

How are gains calculated with so many purchases at different prices?

HMRC requires pooling: all units of the same token form one section 104 pool with an average cost, except that disposals are first matched against purchases on the same day and then against purchases within the following 30 days. We apply these rules across your entire history, which is impossible to do accurately by hand at any volume.

What are the Capital Gains Tax rates and allowance?

The annual exempt amount is £3,000 for 2026/27. Gains above it are taxed at 18% within your basic rate band and 24% above it. Losses in the year are set against gains automatically, and unused losses can be carried forward indefinitely if claimed on a return within four years.

Is staking income a capital gain?

No. Rewards from staking, lending, liquidity provision and most DeFi protocols are income when received, taxed at your income tax rate on the sterling value that day, and reported as miscellaneous income unless your activity amounts to a trade. The tokens then enter your pool at that value for a later capital gain or loss.

The next four dates that apply to crypto tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Goodmayes clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
