Why IGI
The IGI way of working, in Chinatown
One fixed fee for crypto tax in Chinatown, agreed in writing before any work starts and never changed part-way through the job, however long it takes us.
We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Chinatown get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.
We serve Chinatown remotely by design: records by WhatsApp or email, drafts back for approval, filing electronic. The saving on premises is passed to you in the fee for crypto tax.
Continuity matters in crypto tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Chinatown business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
The output for Chinatown clients is never just a form. It is the form, a one-page summary of what it says, and a note of the decisions it points to for crypto tax.
Nothing is filed for Chinatown until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Rules that come up in this work
Late filing penalties
Penalties are the clearest reason to work to deadlines. A Self Assessment return one day late costs £100 regardless of whether any tax is due; three months late adds £10 a day. Late company accounts start at £150 and reach £1,500, and double if the previous year was also late. None of this is negotiable afterwards except through a narrow reasonable-excuse appeal.
Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief
Corporation Tax is not a flat rate. Profits to £50,000 pay 19%, profits above £250,000 pay 25%, and the band between is taxed at an effective marginal rate of 26.5% through the marginal relief mechanism. Associated companies share the thresholds, which catches directors who own more than one company and is the most common cause of underpaid tax in owner-managed groups.
The VAT registration threshold
VAT registration is compulsory once taxable turnover in any rolling twelve-month period exceeds £90,000, or when you expect to exceed that in the next thirty days alone. The test is rolling, not by tax year, and includes zero-rated sales. Businesses regularly cross it without noticing, and late registration means accounting for VAT on sales where it was never charged to customers.
Director's loan accounts
The most common tax problem in owner-managed companies is an overdrawn director's loan account: drawings taken during the year that were never declared as dividends or salary. The company faces a 35.75% charge on the balance outstanding nine months after the year end, and the director may have a benefit in kind. We review the account before every year end to clear it properly.
Salary versus dividends
The salary-and-dividend split is the central planning decision for an owner-managed company. Salary costs employer National Insurance above £5,000 but is deductible; dividends are not deductible but attract lower personal rates and no National Insurance. The optimum changes each April with the thresholds and depends on the director's other income, so it should be set deliberately every year.
CIS deductions
Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from a registered subcontractor's labour invoices, or 30% if unregistered, and pay it to HMRC. The subcontractor reclaims the deductions against their actual tax through Self Assessment, usually producing a refund because deductions are on turnover while tax is on profit. Contractors file a monthly return by the 19th.
Confirmation statements and identity verification
Every company must file a confirmation statement at least once a year, within fourteen days of its review date, with a £50 Companies House fee. Since November 2025 directors and people with significant control must also verify their identity with Companies House, and the confirmation statement is where existing officers confirm they have done so during the transition year.
Questions
Crypto Tax questions from Chinatown
What if I am a trader rather than an investor?
HMRC rarely accepts that an individual is trading in crypto; the bar is very high and the badges of trade must be met. If you are trading, profits are income and losses are trading losses. For almost everyone the capital gains treatment applies, and we tell you plainly which side of the line you are on.
How far back do I need to go?
The pool cost of what you hold today depends on every purchase you have ever made, so the computation must start from your first transaction even if you only need to report recent years. If earlier years were under-reported, we quantify the position and advise on disclosure, which HMRC treats far more leniently than discovery.
I received an HMRC letter about crypto. What should I do?
Do not ignore it and do not reply without the figures. HMRC's nudge letters are sent where exchange data suggests undeclared activity. We prepare the full report, work out what should have been declared, and draft the response, including a voluntary disclosure where tax is owed, which reduces penalties substantially compared with being caught.
How is the fee set?
By transaction count. Up to 500 transactions across all exchanges and wallets is £199 for the report alone or £279 with your Self Assessment filed. Over 500 is £399. A response to an HMRC nudge letter, including the report and the reply, is £249. We confirm the band from your exports before starting.
What do you need from me?
Full transaction exports from every exchange you have used, including closed accounts, and wallet addresses for on-chain activity. Partial history produces wrong pool costs, so completeness matters more than tidiness. We tell you exactly how to export from each major platform.
My exchange collapsed and I lost everything. Can I claim the loss?
Possibly. If the tokens still exist but you cannot access them, a negligible value claim may be available once the asset is effectively worthless. If the exchange is in administration you may need to wait for the outcome. We assess each case against HMRC's guidance and make the claim where it is supportable.
How do I get started from Chinatown?
Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for crypto tax. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Chinatown clients are set up within a day.
Which deadlines matter most for crypto tax?
The next four dates that apply to crypto tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Chinatown clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
