VAT returns in Taobh Lochaidh
Four times a year, every VAT-registered business in Taobh Lochaidh owes HMRC a return and a payment by the 7th of the second month after the quarter end. We make sure both are right: input VAT claimed only where it is allowed, output VAT at the correct rate, and the return filed on time. Fixed monthly fee, agreed in writing.

About Taobh Lochaidh
Taobh Lochaidh is in Scotland, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Closing a company
A solvent company that has finished its purpose can be dissolved by voluntary strike-off: form DS01 with a £13 Companies House fee, after three months without trading and with all debts paid, final accounts and tax return filed, and assets distributed. HMRC objects to any application where returns or tax are outstanding, so the sequence matters more than the form.
Switching accountants
The main reasons people switch accountant are surprise invoices, missed deadlines and not understanding what they are being told. Switching involves a clearance letter between the firms, a transfer of records and agent authorisations, and a short handover of the current position. It takes about two weeks and should cost nothing extra.
Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment
Every employer must assess its workers for automatic enrolment from the first employee's start date. Those aged 22 to State Pension age earning over £10,000 a year must be enrolled into a qualifying pension with minimum contributions of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% from the employer, and a declaration of compliance made to the Pensions Regulator within five months.
Employer National Insurance
Employers pay National Insurance at 15% on each employee's earnings above the £5,000 secondary threshold, following the April 2025 changes. The Employment Allowance offsets up to £10,500 of this for eligible employers, which for a small team often removes the liability entirely, but companies where the director is the only employee do not qualify.
The trading and property allowances
Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.
Dormant companies
A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.
The 60-day property CGT return
Selling UK residential property that was not your main home for the whole period of ownership triggers a separate Capital Gains Tax return, due within 60 days of completion along with payment of the tax. This is in addition to the annual Self Assessment. The gain is taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income band, after the £3,000 annual exempt amount.
Questions
VAT Returns questions from Taobh Lochaidh
Do I need Making Tax Digital software for VAT?
Yes. All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and submit returns through MTD-compatible software; HMRC's old online form is closed. If you have no software, our bookkeeping service provides it, or the MTD VAT setup package at £129 gets you compliant with your first return filed.
Can you handle a VAT registration from scratch?
Yes. Registration with HMRC is £49, or £79 with scheme advice, and £119 including your first return. We need your business details, turnover figures and bank account. HMRC usually issues the VAT number within two to four weeks, and we tell you how to invoice in the meantime.
When are returns and payments due?
One month and seven days after the end of each VAT quarter, for both the return and the payment. A quarter ending 31 March is due by 7 May. Direct debit payments are taken three working days later. We send you the figure and reference at least a week before the date.
Which VAT scheme should I use?
The standard scheme suits most businesses with significant costs. The flat rate scheme can benefit low-cost service businesses, though the limited-cost trader rate of 16.5% removes most of the advantage. Cash accounting helps with slow-paying customers. We review your figures and recommend one; the £79 registration-plus-advice package includes this.
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months exceeds £90,000, or you expect it to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You must register within 30 days of the end of the month you crossed the threshold. Voluntary registration below the threshold is possible and sometimes beneficial; we advise either way.
What does the £35 a month fee cover?
Quarterly VAT returns prepared from your own bookkeeping records, reviewed by us for coding errors, submitted through MTD-compatible software and confirmed back to you with HMRC's receipt and the payment details. If we also do your bookkeeping, the combined bundle is £119 a month.
How do I get started from Taobh Lochaidh?
Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for vat returns. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Taobh Lochaidh clients are set up within a day.
Which deadlines matter most for vat returns?
The next four dates that apply to vat returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Taobh Lochaidh clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
