Local facts

About Stirling

Stirling is in Scotland, in the FK8 postcode district, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

The trading and property allowances

The first £1,000 of trading income and, separately, the first £1,000 of property income each year is tax free under the trading and property allowances. Below those figures no return is needed for that income. Above them you can deduct the £1,000 allowance instead of actual expenses if that is better, which suits side businesses and single-room lets with few costs.

Dormant companies

A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Every employer must assess its workers for automatic enrolment from the first employee's start date. Those aged 22 to State Pension age earning over £10,000 a year must be enrolled into a qualifying pension with minimum contributions of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% from the employer, and a declaration of compliance made to the Pensions Regulator within five months.

Employer National Insurance

The cost of an employee is more than the salary. Employer National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 a year, the 3% minimum pension contribution, holiday pay, equipment and management time all come on top. The Employment Allowance of £10,500 reduces the National Insurance for most employers with more than one person on the payroll.

Allowable expenses

The expenses sole traders most often miss are home working costs, claimed by actual proportion or HMRC's flat rate, the business share of phone and internet, mileage at 45p for the first 10,000 business miles, and training that maintains existing skills. The ones most often claimed wrongly are commuting, entertaining customers and clothes that could be worn outside work.

Record keeping

HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.

The 60-day property CGT return

The 60-day Capital Gains Tax return on residential property is the deadline landlords most often miss, because it falls outside the Self Assessment cycle and runs from completion, not exchange. Private residence relief for periods you lived in the property, plus the final nine months, reduces the gain. Penalties for a late return mirror Self Assessment, starting at £100.

Questions

Management Accounts questions from Stirling

Can management accounts help with Corporation Tax planning?

Yes. Because the pack shows profit accruing through the year, decisions about capital expenditure, pension contributions and dividend timing can be made before the year end rather than discovered after it. We flag these opportunities in the commentary as they arise.

Will lenders and investors accept your management accounts?

Yes. Banks, invoice financiers and investors routinely ask for monthly management accounts as a condition of facilities or as part of due diligence, and our packs are in the format they expect. We can also produce the specific covenant calculations a facility requires.

Which KPIs do you report?

Those that drive your business, agreed at the start: gross margin by product or service line, revenue per employee, debtor days, stock turn, cash runway, utilisation for a service firm, average order value for a retailer. We recommend a short list and refine it over the first quarter. A dashboard with twenty numbers is one nobody reads.

When does the pack arrive?

On a fixed working day agreed with you, typically the 10th to 15th of the following month for monthly packs, provided the bookkeeping is complete by the 5th. Quarterly packs follow the quarter end on the same basis. If your records arrive late the date moves and we tell you.

What is the review call?

A 30 to 45 minute video call each period in the £199 package to go through the pack, discuss what it shows and what decisions it points to. It is the part clients value most, because numbers on a page do not ask questions and we do.

Can you compare against a budget?

Yes, if you have one. If you do not, we compare against the same period last year and, if you want one, help you build a simple budget as part of the first quarter. Variance against budget is the most useful single comparison in the pack once a budget exists.

Is management accounts in Stirling really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Stirling pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Stirling?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Stirling and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for management accounts is the same in Stirling as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
