Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Closing a company
Striking off a company is cheap but must be done in order: stop trading, file the final accounts and CT600, pay the tax, close VAT and PAYE, distribute the remaining assets, close the bank account, then apply. Anything left in the company at dissolution passes to the Crown. Distributions up to £25,000 are taxed as capital gains; above that a formal liquidation is usually needed to keep capital treatment.
Switching accountants
Changing accountant is simpler than most people fear. You authorise the new firm, which writes to the old one for professional clearance and your records; the outgoing accountant must hand over your own documents and usually does within two weeks. The new firm registers as your agent with HMRC and picks up the next filing. There is no need to wait for a year end.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
The biggest change to Self Assessment in a generation is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, now live for higher-earning sole traders and landlords and arriving for the rest in stages. Quarterly updates are due by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, built from digital records. The practical consequence is that spreadsheet-and-shoebox bookkeeping is ending for anyone above the threshold.
Late filing penalties
HMRC's penalties for a late Self Assessment return are automatic: £100 the day after 31 January, £10 a day from three months late up to £900, then the greater of £300 or 5% of the tax at six and twelve months. Interest and separate late-payment penalties apply to the tax itself. Companies House charges £150 to £1,500 for late accounts, doubling for a second consecutive year.
Payments on account
A common surprise in Self Assessment is the January payment that is far larger than expected. That is the balancing payment for the year just ended plus the first payment on account for the year ahead, which HMRC sets at half of the bill just calculated. We put the figure in your hands months ahead and tell you how to adjust it legitimately when circumstances change.
The Self Assessment calendar
Four dates govern Self Assessment: 5 October to register, 31 October for paper returns, 31 January to file online and pay, and 31 July for the second payment on account. Missing the January date triggers an automatic £100 penalty before any tax is even considered, so we treat it as the fixed point around which the rest of the year is planned.
Director's loan accounts
The most common tax problem in owner-managed companies is an overdrawn director's loan account: drawings taken during the year that were never declared as dividends or salary. The company faces a 35.75% charge on the balance outstanding nine months after the year end, and the director may have a benefit in kind. We review the account before every year end to clear it properly.
Questions
Capital Gains Tax questions from Salford
I am an executor. Do I report gains for the estate?
Yes. During the administration period the estate is a separate taxpayer with its own annual exemption and pays CGT at 24% on gains above probate value. Residential property sales by the estate are subject to the 60-day rule. We prepare the estate computations and the trust and estate return pages.
I am not UK resident but sold a UK property. Do I need to report?
Yes. Non-residents must report all UK land and property disposals within 60 days, whether or not tax is due, and residential property gains are generally rebased to April 2015 values. The rules differ from those for residents and the penalties for not reporting are the same. We handle non-resident returns regularly.
What if I sell shares from an employee share scheme?
It depends on the scheme. Shares from a SAYE or SIP scheme have specific cost rules and sometimes income tax has already been paid on part of the value. Options exercised and sold on the same day may have no gain at all. We need the scheme documents and the exercise and sale figures, and we apply the correct treatment for each.
Do transfers between spouses trigger tax?
No. Transfers between spouses or civil partners living together are at no gain and no loss; the recipient takes over the original cost. This allows both annual exemptions and both basic rate bands to be used on a later sale, which is a common and legitimate way to reduce the tax on a jointly planned disposal.
Can I use losses from previous years?
Yes, if they were claimed on a return within four years of the tax year in which they arose. Current-year losses are set against current-year gains first, even if that wastes the annual exemption; brought-forward losses are only used to the extent needed to bring gains down to the exemption. We check for unclaimed historical losses as standard.
How do you work out gains on shares bought at different times?
Disposals are matched first to shares bought the same day, then to shares bought in the following 30 days, then to the section 104 pool, which holds all other shares of that class at their average cost. The same rules apply to funds and to crypto. We run the matching across your full history.
Is capital gains tax in Salford really the same price as elsewhere?
Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Salford pays and what a client in any other part of England pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
Do you have an office in Salford?
No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Salford and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for capital gains tax is the same in Salford as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
