Local facts

About Rothes

Rothes is in Scotland, in the AB38 postcode district, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Closing a company

Striking off a company is cheap but must be done in order: stop trading, file the final accounts and CT600, pay the tax, close VAT and PAYE, distribute the remaining assets, close the bank account, then apply. Anything left in the company at dissolution passes to the Crown. Distributions up to £25,000 are taxed as capital gains; above that a formal liquidation is usually needed to keep capital treatment.

Switching accountants

Changing accountant is simpler than most people fear. You authorise the new firm, which writes to the old one for professional clearance and your records; the outgoing accountant must hand over your own documents and usually does within two weeks. The new firm registers as your agent with HMRC and picks up the next filing. There is no need to wait for a year end.

Allowable expenses

An expense is allowable against trading profit if it is incurred wholly and exclusively for the business. Materials, business travel other than ordinary commuting, a proportion of home running costs, software, insurance, professional fees, bank charges and protective clothing qualify. Client entertainment, ordinary clothing, fines and the private share of mixed-use costs do not.

Record keeping

HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.

The 60-day property CGT return

Selling UK residential property that was not your main home for the whole period of ownership triggers a separate Capital Gains Tax return, due within 60 days of completion along with payment of the tax. This is in addition to the annual Self Assessment. The gain is taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income band, after the £3,000 annual exempt amount.

Crypto records and reporting

Most crypto holders have taxable events they do not recognise, because every swap is a disposal even when no pounds change hands. The computation requires the complete transaction history from every exchange and wallet, pooled by asset with HMRC's matching rules applied. Exchange-generated tax reports are frequently wrong because they cannot see transfers between a user's own wallets.

The trading and property allowances

Not every small income needs a tax return. The trading allowance exempts the first £1,000 of self-employment or casual income and the property allowance does the same for rental income, each measured on gross receipts. They cannot be combined with rent-a-room relief on the same income, and claiming the allowance means giving up the expense deduction for that source.

Questions

Self Assessment Tax Returns questions from Rothes

What records should I keep, and for how long?

Invoices, bank statements, receipts, P60s and P45s, dividend vouchers and any HMRC letters. Keep them for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to. Photos and PDFs are acceptable to HMRC; paper is not required.

Do you handle Scottish or Welsh income tax?

Yes. Scottish taxpayers have six bands from 19% to 48% and Welsh taxpayers have Welsh rates set by the Senedd, both applied automatically from the residence HMRC holds for you. We check that address is right, because an out-of-date one is a common cause of wrong tax codes.

How quickly can you file once I send my records?

Most straightforward returns are drafted within five working days of receiving complete records and filed the day you approve. In January we prioritise by deadline risk and tell you your slot when you book, so late bookers are not left guessing.

What does the £129 return cover?

A full SA100 with the supplementary pages for one income source, prepared, checked and filed online. Rental income, capital gains or several income sources move you to the £169 or £199 package, and we tell you which applies before we start, never on the invoice.

What if my return is late?

We file late returns at the £179 rescue fee, which includes drafting a reasonable-excuse appeal where the facts support one. The £100 automatic penalty is HMRC's, not ours, and we tell you honestly whether an appeal has a realistic chance before you pay for it.

I have never filed before. Do I need a UTR first?

Yes. If you have not registered we handle the registration as part of the job and HMRC posts your Unique Taxpayer Reference within about ten working days. Start early if your first deadline is close, because HMRC will not accept a return without it.

Is self assessment tax returns in Rothes really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Rothes pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Rothes?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Rothes and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for self assessment tax returns is the same in Rothes as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
