How it works

Freelancer Accountants from Reading, step by step

  1. Tell us your situation

A short message or call about what you do and what needs filing. We ask the questions that determine the right package and nothing more.

  2. Fixed fee in writing

You receive one price for the work, confirmed by email before anything starts. It does not change if the job takes longer than we expected.

  3. Send records, review the draft

Records come by WhatsApp or email. We prepare the draft, explain the figures in plain English and answer your questions.

  4. We file, you get the receipts

Once you approve and the fee is settled, we submit electronically and forward the HMRC or Companies House acknowledgement the same day.

Why IGI

The IGI way of working, in Reading

The price for freelancer accountants is published on this page and is what a client in Reading pays. We confirm it in writing first, and the invoice matches the quote.

Deadline-first: the dates that matter for freelancer accountants are shown at the top of this page, diarised for every Reading client and chased before they arrive.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Reading to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in freelancer accountants: the person who prepared last year's work for your Reading business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Reading comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.

You stay in control of freelancer accountants: drafts go to Reading clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Workplace pension compliance is part of payroll, not separate from it. Each pay period the payroll assesses who is eligible, calculates employer and employee contributions on qualifying earnings between the lower and upper thresholds, and sends the contribution file to the scheme. The minimum total is 8%, and many employers choose to contribute more as a recruitment advantage.

Dormant companies

Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.

The trading and property allowances

Not every small income needs a tax return. The trading allowance exempts the first £1,000 of self-employment or casual income and the property allowance does the same for rental income, each measured on gross receipts. They cannot be combined with rent-a-room relief on the same income, and claiming the allowance means giving up the expense deduction for that source.

Crypto records and reporting

Crypto tax splits into capital gains on disposals and income on rewards, with different rates and different reporting. The £3,000 annual exempt amount and the 18% and 24% rates apply to gains; staking, mining and airdrop income is taxed at marginal income tax rates. HMRC's nudge letters to holders have increased sharply, and a voluntary disclosure before one arrives is treated far more leniently.

The 60-day property CGT return

Since April 2020 a gain on UK residential property must be reported and the tax paid within 60 days of completion through HMRC's dedicated service, separately from the annual return. Non-residents must report all UK land disposals in the same window whether or not tax is due. Getting the computation right first time matters because the figure is then carried into the Self Assessment.

Record keeping

HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.

Allowable expenses

Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.

Questions

Freelancer Accountants questions from Reading

Do I need to register for VAT?

Only when your taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months exceeds £90,000, or voluntarily before that. Many freelancers with business clients register voluntarily to reclaim VAT on equipment; those with consumer clients usually wait. We monitor your rolling turnover and advise before the threshold is reached.

What is the starter session?

A £99 video call before or soon after you go freelance, covering the sole trader versus company decision, registration with HMRC, how to price so that tax is covered, what records to keep and how, invoicing and payment terms, and the dates that matter. You come away with a written plan. If you then join a monthly package the £99 is credited.

How do you handle irregular and overseas income?

Irregular income is normal for freelancers and the monthly summary shows the year-to-date position so lean months are planned for. Overseas clients are invoiced without UK VAT in most cases, and any foreign tax withheld can usually be credited against your UK liability. Both are handled within the package.

Does Making Tax Digital apply to freelancers?

If your gross self-employment plus property income was over £50,000 in 2024/25 you joined MTD for Income Tax in April 2026; over £30,000 means April 2027; over £20,000 is planned for April 2028. It means digital records and quarterly updates. Our monthly package keeps the records in the right form and submits the updates.

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

At profits under roughly £30,000 to £40,000 a sole trader is simpler and the tax saving from a company is small after the extra compliance cost. Above that, or where clients prefer to contract with a company or liability is a concern, incorporation can make sense. Our free comparison tool gives a first view and the starter session a definitive one.

What is the annual-only option?

For £229 a year we prepare your year-end accounts and Self Assessment from the records you keep yourself, whether in software or a spreadsheet. It suits freelancers with modest transaction volumes who are organised. If the records arrive as a shoebox, the sole trader accounts shoebox fee applies instead.

Do you have an office in Reading?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Reading and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for freelancer accountants is the same in Reading as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.

Is freelancer accountants in Reading really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Reading pays and what a client in any other part of England pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
