How it works

Payroll from Plymouth, step by step

  1. Tell us your situation

A short message or call about what you do and what needs filing. We ask the questions that determine the right package and nothing more.

  2. Fixed fee in writing

You receive one price for the work, confirmed by email before anything starts. It does not change if the job takes longer than we expected.

  3. Send records, review the draft

Records come by WhatsApp or email. We prepare the draft, explain the figures in plain English and answer your questions.

  4. We file, you get the receipts

Once you approve and the fee is settled, we submit electronically and forward the HMRC or Companies House acknowledgement the same day.

Why IGI

What you get in Plymouth

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Plymouth clients know the fee for payroll before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Plymouth get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to payroll.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Plymouth to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in payroll: the person who prepared last year's work for your Plymouth business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

We explain payroll in the words Plymouth business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

Nothing is filed for Plymouth until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

The Self Assessment calendar

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Anyone new to Self Assessment must register by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which their untaxed income began. The online return and the balancing payment are due by 31 January, with a second payment on account on 31 July where they apply. Paper returns have an earlier deadline of 31 October and are rarely sensible.

Payments on account

A common surprise in Self Assessment is the January payment that is far larger than expected. That is the balancing payment for the year just ended plus the first payment on account for the year ahead, which HMRC sets at half of the bill just calculated. We put the figure in your hands months ahead and tell you how to adjust it legitimately when circumstances change.

Late filing penalties

Lateness is expensive in a way that compounds. For individuals, £100 immediately, then daily penalties, then percentage-based ones at six and twelve months, with interest running on unpaid tax throughout. For companies, Companies House penalties scale with delay and double on repeat, and HMRC adds its own for a late CT600. Filing on time is the cheapest tax planning there is.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

The biggest change to Self Assessment in a generation is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, now live for higher-earning sole traders and landlords and arriving for the rest in stages. Quarterly updates are due by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, built from digital records. The practical consequence is that spreadsheet-and-shoebox bookkeeping is ending for anyone above the threshold.

The VAT registration threshold

Watching the rolling twelve-month turnover figure is one of the quiet jobs of monthly bookkeeping, because the £90,000 VAT threshold arrives silently. Crossing it brings quarterly returns, Making Tax Digital software and a decision about schemes. Crossing it late brings a bill for VAT you could not recover from customers and a penalty for failing to notify.

Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief

Companies pay Corporation Tax at 19% on profits up to £50,000 and 25% on profits over £250,000. Between those figures marginal relief applies, producing an effective rate that rises gradually and a marginal rate of 26.5% on each pound in the band. The thresholds are divided by the number of associated companies, so a director with two companies has thresholds of £25,000 and £125,000 for each.

Salary versus dividends

The salary-and-dividend split is the central planning decision for an owner-managed company. Salary costs employer National Insurance above £5,000 but is deductible; dividends are not deductible but attract lower personal rates and no National Insurance. The optimum changes each April with the thresholds and depends on the director's other income, so it should be set deliberately every year.

Questions

Payroll questions from Plymouth

Can you take over mid-year from another provider or software?

Yes. We need the year-to-date figures for each employee, the last submissions to HMRC and the pension scheme details. The transfer is included in the fee and the first pay run under us reconciles to the previous provider's figures so HMRC sees no gap.

I am taking on my first employee. What do I need?

A PAYE employer registration with HMRC (our £49 service, or £99 with the first payroll run set up), a workplace pension scheme, employer's liability insurance, a written statement of employment terms and right-to-work checks. We handle the first two and tell you plainly what to do about the rest.

What is the Employment Allowance?

Eligible employers can reduce their employer National Insurance bill by up to £10,500 a year (2026/27). Single-director companies with no other employees do not qualify. We claim it on your behalf where you are eligible, which for a small team often wipes out the employer NI entirely.

Do you provide payslips and P60s?

Yes. Electronic payslips go to each employee every pay period through a secure portal or by email as you prefer. P60s for everyone employed at 5 April are issued by 31 May. If you provide benefits such as a company car or private medical cover, P11Ds are prepared and filed by 6 July.

What does the £25 director-only payroll include?

Monthly payroll for one director: the payslip, the RTI submission to HMRC, the calculation of any PAYE and National Insurance due, year-end P60 and final submission. It is designed for directors taking a salary around the National Insurance thresholds alongside dividends.

How is the fee set for a team?

By headcount: up to 5 employees is £45 a month and up to 10 is £69 a month, whatever the pay frequency. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly payrolls cost the same. Over 10 employees we quote a fixed fee per month based on numbers and complexity before starting.

How do I get started from Plymouth?

Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for payroll. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Plymouth clients are set up within a day.

Do you have an office in Plymouth?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Plymouth and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for payroll is the same in Plymouth as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
