Why IGI
Why Perivale businesses file with IGI
No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Perivale clients know the fee for tax planning before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.
We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Perivale get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to tax planning.
Online only, UK based. There is no office in Perivale to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.
Continuity matters in tax planning: the person who prepared last year's work for your Perivale business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
We explain tax planning in the words Perivale business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.
You stay in control of tax planning: drafts go to Perivale clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
The VAT registration threshold
Watching the rolling twelve-month turnover figure is one of the quiet jobs of monthly bookkeeping, because the £90,000 VAT threshold arrives silently. Crossing it brings quarterly returns, Making Tax Digital software and a decision about schemes. Crossing it late brings a bill for VAT you could not recover from customers and a penalty for failing to notify.
Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief
Since April 2023 there have been two Corporation Tax rates, 19% small profits and 25% main, with marginal relief smoothing the transition between £50,000 and £250,000 of profit. The band is where planning matters: each pound of profit in it is taxed at an effective 26.5%, so pension contributions and capital expenditure timed to keep profit below £50,000 are worth more than they look.
Salary versus dividends
The salary-and-dividend split is the central planning decision for an owner-managed company. Salary costs employer National Insurance above £5,000 but is deductible; dividends are not deductible but attract lower personal rates and no National Insurance. The optimum changes each April with the thresholds and depends on the director's other income, so it should be set deliberately every year.
Director's loan accounts
The most common tax problem in owner-managed companies is an overdrawn director's loan account: drawings taken during the year that were never declared as dividends or salary. The company faces a 35.75% charge on the balance outstanding nine months after the year end, and the director may have a benefit in kind. We review the account before every year end to clear it properly.
The Self Assessment calendar
Self Assessment runs on a fixed annual cycle. Registration by 5 October following the tax year, online filing and payment by 31 January, and a second instalment on 31 July for those making payments on account. The penalties for lateness are automatic and escalate monthly, which is why we file early and chase approvals well before the window closes.
Payments on account
Payments on account catch out most people in their second year of self-employment. HMRC assumes next year's tax will match this year's and collects half in January and half in July, in advance, on top of the balancing payment. If profits are dropping you can apply to reduce them, but reducing them too far attracts interest. We calculate the right figure rather than guessing.
Late filing penalties
HMRC's penalties for a late Self Assessment return are automatic: £100 the day after 31 January, £10 a day from three months late up to £900, then the greater of £300 or 5% of the tax at six and twelve months. Interest and separate late-payment penalties apply to the tax itself. Companies House charges £150 to £1,500 for late accounts, doubling for a second consecutive year.
Questions
Tax Planning questions from Perivale
Do you recommend tax avoidance schemes?
No. We use established reliefs and allowances that Parliament intended: pensions, ISAs, spousal transfers, capital allowances, dividend and salary structuring, timing. We do not sell arrangements that depend on HMRC not noticing. If someone offers you a scheme that sounds too good, the £249 review will tell you why it probably is.
How much tax will a review save me?
It depends entirely on your position, and we would rather not promise a number. Common findings are a director salary set years ago at the wrong level, pension headroom unused, a spouse's allowances wasted, dividends bunched into one tax year and capital allowances missed. For most directors the saving exceeds the fee several times; where it would not, we say so before you pay.
What do I need to provide?
Your last tax return, the company's last accounts and current management figures if you have them, pension statements, details of other income and your spouse's position if relevant, and an idea of what you want from the business over the next few years. We send a short checklist when you book.
Is tax planning advice regulated?
Tax advice is not a reserved activity in the UK, so no regulator licenses it, but we are bound by our terms of business and the advice disclaimer on this site, and we carry professional indemnity insurance. Advice is given in writing so that you can rely on it and we can be held to it.
What does the £249 personal tax review cover?
Your income from all sources, the allowances and reliefs you are and are not using, pension contribution headroom, the personal allowance taper and High Income Child Benefit charge if relevant, savings and dividend allowances, ISA use, marriage allowance, gift aid and the timing of any disposals. You receive a written report with quantified recommendations.
What does the director remuneration review cover?
For £249 we model the coming year's salary, dividends, employer pension contributions and any benefits against the company's expected profit and your other income, showing the total tax and National Insurance under each option and recommending a structure. It includes the use of a spouse's shareholding and allowances where relevant.
Which deadlines matter most for tax planning?
The next four dates that apply to tax planning are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Perivale clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
