Why IGI
The IGI way of working, in Paisley
One fixed fee for freelancer accountants in Paisley, agreed in writing before any work starts and never changed part-way through the job, however long it takes us.
We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Paisley get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to freelancer accountants.
We serve Paisley remotely by design: records by WhatsApp or email, drafts back for approval, filing electronic. The saving on premises is passed to you in the fee for freelancer accountants.
Continuity matters in freelancer accountants: the person who prepared last year's work for your Paisley business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
The output for Paisley clients is never just a form. It is the form, a one-page summary of what it says, and a note of the decisions it points to for freelancer accountants.

Local facts
About Paisley
Paisley is in Scotland, in the PA1 postcode district, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Closing a company
A solvent company that has finished its purpose can be dissolved by voluntary strike-off: form DS01 with a £13 Companies House fee, after three months without trading and with all debts paid, final accounts and tax return filed, and assets distributed. HMRC objects to any application where returns or tax are outstanding, so the sequence matters more than the form.
Switching accountants
You can switch accountant at any point in the year. The new firm requests clearance and your records from the old one, which cannot withhold your own documents though it may hold its own working papers until its fees are settled. Agent authorisations with HMRC and Companies House are transferred, and the next deadline is picked up without a gap.
CIS deductions
The Construction Industry Scheme affects both sides of a construction payment. Contractors must verify subcontractors, deduct the right amount, issue statements and file monthly, with penalties from £100 for each late return. Subcontractors suffer deductions on turnover and recover the excess at the year end. Limited company subcontractors offset deductions against PAYE monthly instead.
Confirmation statements and identity verification
Every company must file a confirmation statement at least once a year, within fourteen days of its review date, with a £50 Companies House fee. Since November 2025 directors and people with significant control must also verify their identity with Companies House, and the confirmation statement is where existing officers confirm they have done so during the transition year.
The 60-day property CGT return
Since April 2020 a gain on UK residential property must be reported and the tax paid within 60 days of completion through HMRC's dedicated service, separately from the annual return. Non-residents must report all UK land disposals in the same window whether or not tax is due. Getting the computation right first time matters because the figure is then carried into the Self Assessment.
Crypto records and reporting
HMRC treats cryptoassets as property. Swapping one token for another, spending crypto or gifting it are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, and staking and lending rewards are income. Gains are computed under pooling rules with same-day and 30-day matching. From 2026 HMRC receives data from exchanges worldwide under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, so unreported activity is increasingly visible.
Allowable expenses
Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.
Questions
Freelancer Accountants questions from Paisley
What is the starter session?
A £99 video call before or soon after you go freelance, covering the sole trader versus company decision, registration with HMRC, how to price so that tax is covered, what records to keep and how, invoicing and payment terms, and the dates that matter. You come away with a written plan. If you then join a monthly package the £99 is credited.
I have a job and freelance on the side. How does that work?
Your employment is taxed through PAYE and your freelance profit is added on top through Self Assessment, usually at your marginal rate. If freelance income is under £1,000 the trading allowance means no return is needed. Above that, register by 5 October after the tax year you started. Our package covers the whole return including the employment pages.
Can I claim for my laptop and camera?
Yes. Equipment used for the business qualifies for capital allowances, usually the annual investment allowance giving full relief in the year of purchase, restricted for private use. Under the cash basis equipment is simply an expense when paid. Items bought before you started can be brought in at market value.
What expenses can freelancers claim?
A proportion of home costs for the space and hours you work there, or HMRC's flat rate; equipment and software; professional subscriptions and insurance; training that maintains existing skills; business travel other than commuting; marketing and website costs; bank charges; and the business share of phone and internet. We review your categories every month.
How much should I set aside for tax?
For a sole trader, roughly 20% to 30% of profit covers income tax and Class 4 National Insurance at basic rate, more at higher rate, plus payments on account in the first year they apply. We give you a specific monthly figure based on your actual profit each month, which is more useful than a rule of thumb.
What is the annual-only option?
For £229 a year we prepare your year-end accounts and Self Assessment from the records you keep yourself, whether in software or a spreadsheet. It suits freelancers with modest transaction volumes who are organised. If the records arrive as a shoebox, the sole trader accounts shoebox fee applies instead.
How do I get started from Paisley?
Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for freelancer accountants. Which deadlines matter most for freelancer accountants?
The next four dates that apply to freelancer accountants are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Paisley clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
