VAT returns in Merthyr
Four times a year, every VAT-registered business in Merthyr owes HMRC a return and a payment by the 7th of the second month after the quarter end. We make sure both are right: input VAT claimed only where it is allowed, output VAT at the correct rate, and the return filed on time. Fixed monthly fee, agreed in writing.

About Merthyr
Merthyr is in Wales, Wales. Businesses in Wales file with the same HMRC and Companies House as England, and for now the Welsh rates of income tax equal the English ones, though the Senedd can vary them. The practical differences are Land Transaction Tax on property and Welsh-specific business support schemes, and company names and documents may be in Welsh.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Late filing penalties
HMRC's penalties for a late Self Assessment return are automatic: £100 the day after 31 January, £10 a day from three months late up to £900, then the greater of £300 or 5% of the tax at six and twelve months. Interest and separate late-payment penalties apply to the tax itself. Companies House charges £150 to £1,500 for late accounts, doubling for a second consecutive year.
Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief
Corporation Tax is not a flat rate. Profits to £50,000 pay 19%, profits above £250,000 pay 25%, and the band between is taxed at an effective marginal rate of 26.5% through the marginal relief mechanism. Associated companies share the thresholds, which catches directors who own more than one company and is the most common cause of underpaid tax in owner-managed groups.
The VAT registration threshold
Watching the rolling twelve-month turnover figure is one of the quiet jobs of monthly bookkeeping, because the £90,000 VAT threshold arrives silently. Crossing it brings quarterly returns, Making Tax Digital software and a decision about schemes. Crossing it late brings a bill for VAT you could not recover from customers and a penalty for failing to notify.
Director's loan accounts
Money taken from a company has to be something: salary, dividend, expense reimbursement or loan. If it is a loan and remains outstanding nine months after the year end, the company pays tax at the dividend higher rate on it until it is repaid. Clearing the balance with a properly declared dividend before the deadline, where reserves allow, is routine year-end work.
Salary versus dividends
The salary-and-dividend split is the central planning decision for an owner-managed company. Salary costs employer National Insurance above £5,000 but is deductible; dividends are not deductible but attract lower personal rates and no National Insurance. The optimum changes each April with the thresholds and depends on the director's other income, so it should be set deliberately every year.
CIS deductions
Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from a registered subcontractor's labour invoices, or 30% if unregistered, and pay it to HMRC. The subcontractor reclaims the deductions against their actual tax through Self Assessment, usually producing a refund because deductions are on turnover while tax is on profit. Contractors file a monthly return by the 19th.
Confirmation statements and identity verification
The confirmation statement is the annual check that the public register is right: officers, registered office, SIC codes, shareholders and the PSC register. It carries a £50 fee and no financial penalty for lateness, but failure to file leads to compulsory strike-off. The identity verification regime introduced in November 2025 has added a further check to every statement.
Questions
VAT Returns questions from Merthyr
I sell online through marketplaces. Who accounts for the VAT?
For goods sold to UK consumers through an online marketplace by an overseas seller, the marketplace accounts for the VAT. UK-based sellers account for their own. Imports, low-value consignments and sales to EU customers each have specific rules, and our e-commerce specialists handle the detail.
How does the domestic reverse charge affect construction businesses?
Since March 2021, VAT-registered subcontractors supplying construction services to VAT-registered contractors within CIS do not charge VAT; the contractor accounts for it. Invoices must say so. Getting this wrong in either direction is common and we check every construction client's invoices against the rule.
Can I claim VAT on everything the business buys?
Only on purchases used for making taxable supplies, with a valid VAT invoice. Business entertainment, most cars and anything with private use are restricted or blocked. If you make some exempt supplies, partial exemption rules limit recovery. We check these before each return.
What happens if a return is late?
HMRC's points-based system gives one penalty point per late return; at four points (for quarterly filers) each further late return costs £200. Late payment penalties start at 3% of the tax after 15 days, with daily interest from day one. We file on time if we have your records; late-filer rescues are £99 per return.
When are returns and payments due?
One month and seven days after the end of each VAT quarter, for both the return and the payment. A quarter ending 31 March is due by 7 May. Direct debit payments are taken three working days later. We send you the figure and reference at least a week before the date.
Which VAT scheme should I use?
The standard scheme suits most businesses with significant costs. The flat rate scheme can benefit low-cost service businesses, though the limited-cost trader rate of 16.5% removes most of the advantage. Cash accounting helps with slow-paying customers. We review your figures and recommend one; the £79 registration-plus-advice package includes this.
How do I get started from Merthyr?
Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for vat returns. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Merthyr clients are set up within a day.
Which deadlines matter most for vat returns?
The next four dates that apply to vat returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Merthyr clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
