VAT returns in Meavag

Four times a year, every VAT-registered business in Meavag owes HMRC a return and a payment by the 7th of the second month after the quarter end. We make sure both are right: input VAT claimed only where it is allowed, output VAT at the correct rate, and the return filed on time. Fixed monthly fee, agreed in writing.

Why IGI

What you get in Meavag

One fixed fee for vat returns in Meavag, agreed in writing before any work starts and never changed part-way through the job, however long it takes us.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Meavag get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to vat returns.

We serve Meavag remotely by design: records by WhatsApp or email, drafts back for approval, filing electronic. The saving on premises is passed to you in the fee for vat returns.

Continuity matters in vat returns: the person who prepared last year's work for your Meavag business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

We explain vat returns in the words Meavag business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

You stay in control of vat returns: drafts go to Meavag clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

About Meavag

Meavag is in Scotland, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

CIS deductions

Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from a registered subcontractor's labour invoices, or 30% if unregistered, and pay it to HMRC. The subcontractor reclaims the deductions against their actual tax through Self Assessment, usually producing a refund because deductions are on turnover while tax is on profit. Contractors file a monthly return by the 19th.

Confirmation statements and identity verification

Every company must file a confirmation statement at least once a year, within fourteen days of its review date, with a £50 Companies House fee. Since November 2025 directors and people with significant control must also verify their identity with Companies House, and the confirmation statement is where existing officers confirm they have done so during the transition year.

Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief

Since April 2023 there have been two Corporation Tax rates, 19% small profits and 25% main, with marginal relief smoothing the transition between £50,000 and £250,000 of profit. The band is where planning matters: each pound of profit in it is taxed at an effective 26.5%, so pension contributions and capital expenditure timed to keep profit below £50,000 are worth more than they look.

The VAT registration threshold

Watching the rolling twelve-month turnover figure is one of the quiet jobs of monthly bookkeeping, because the £90,000 VAT threshold arrives silently. Crossing it brings quarterly returns, Making Tax Digital software and a decision about schemes. Crossing it late brings a bill for VAT you could not recover from customers and a penalty for failing to notify.

Director's loan accounts

The most common tax problem in owner-managed companies is an overdrawn director's loan account: drawings taken during the year that were never declared as dividends or salary. The company faces a 35.75% charge on the balance outstanding nine months after the year end, and the director may have a benefit in kind. We review the account before every year end to clear it properly.

Salary versus dividends

The salary-and-dividend split is the central planning decision for an owner-managed company. Salary costs employer National Insurance above £5,000 but is deductible; dividends are not deductible but attract lower personal rates and no National Insurance. The optimum changes each April with the thresholds and depends on the director's other income, so it should be set deliberately every year.

Payments on account

A common surprise in Self Assessment is the January payment that is far larger than expected. That is the balancing payment for the year just ended plus the first payment on account for the year ahead, which HMRC sets at half of the bill just calculated. We put the figure in your hands months ahead and tell you how to adjust it legitimately when circumstances change.

Questions

VAT Returns questions from Meavag

When are returns and payments due?

One month and seven days after the end of each VAT quarter, for both the return and the payment. A quarter ending 31 March is due by 7 May. Direct debit payments are taken three working days later. We send you the figure and reference at least a week before the date.

Which VAT scheme should I use?

The standard scheme suits most businesses with significant costs. The flat rate scheme can benefit low-cost service businesses, though the limited-cost trader rate of 16.5% removes most of the advantage. Cash accounting helps with slow-paying customers. We review your figures and recommend one; the £79 registration-plus-advice package includes this.

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months exceeds £90,000, or you expect it to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You must register within 30 days of the end of the month you crossed the threshold. Voluntary registration below the threshold is possible and sometimes beneficial; we advise either way.

What does the £35 a month fee cover?

Quarterly VAT returns prepared from your own bookkeeping records, reviewed by us for coding errors, submitted through MTD-compatible software and confirmed back to you with HMRC's receipt and the payment details. If we also do your bookkeeping, the combined bundle is £119 a month.

I sell online through marketplaces. Who accounts for the VAT?

For goods sold to UK consumers through an online marketplace by an overseas seller, the marketplace accounts for the VAT. UK-based sellers account for their own. Imports, low-value consignments and sales to EU customers each have specific rules, and our e-commerce specialists handle the detail.

How does the domestic reverse charge affect construction businesses?

Since March 2021, VAT-registered subcontractors supplying construction services to VAT-registered contractors within CIS do not charge VAT; the contractor accounts for it. Invoices must say so. Getting this wrong in either direction is common and we check every construction client's invoices against the rule.

How do I get started from Meavag?

Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for vat returns. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Meavag clients are set up within a day.

Which deadlines matter most for vat returns?

The next four dates that apply to vat returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Meavag clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
