Local facts

About Maesygwartha

Maesygwartha is in Wales, Wales. Businesses in Wales file with the same HMRC and Companies House as England, and for now the Welsh rates of income tax equal the English ones, though the Senedd can vary them. The practical differences are Land Transaction Tax on property and Welsh-specific business support schemes, and company names and documents may be in Welsh.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Closing a company

Striking off a company is cheap but must be done in order: stop trading, file the final accounts and CT600, pay the tax, close VAT and PAYE, distribute the remaining assets, close the bank account, then apply. Anything left in the company at dissolution passes to the Crown. Distributions up to £25,000 are taxed as capital gains; above that a formal liquidation is usually needed to keep capital treatment.

Switching accountants

You can switch accountant at any point in the year. The new firm requests clearance and your records from the old one, which cannot withhold your own documents though it may hold its own working papers until its fees are settled. Agent authorisations with HMRC and Companies House are transferred, and the next deadline is picked up without a gap.

The trading and property allowances

Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.

Dormant companies

A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Auto-enrolment duties begin the day you take on your first employee, not when the Pensions Regulator writes to you. Eligible staff must be enrolled, contributions paid every pay period and re-enrolment carried out every three years. Director-only companies without employment contracts are usually exempt. Fines for non-compliance are fixed and escalating.

Employer National Insurance

Since April 2025 employer National Insurance has been 15% on earnings above a £5,000 secondary threshold, a substantial increase for small employers. The Employment Allowance rose to £10,500 at the same time to soften it for the smallest businesses. Directors deciding their own salary weigh this cost against the Corporation Tax deduction a salary provides.

Allowable expenses

Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.

Questions

Self Assessment Tax Returns questions from Maesygwartha

Do I pay before or after filing?

The fee is invoiced when you approve the draft, before we file. Nothing is submitted to HMRC until it is paid and you have confirmed every figure, and you receive HMRC's submission receipt within minutes of filing.

Can you deal with HMRC on my behalf?

Once you authorise us as your agent we can speak to HMRC about your return, see your account and respond to letters about the return we filed. The authorisation is free, done through your Government Gateway or a code HMRC posts to you, and takes a few days to activate.

Which expenses can I claim as a sole trader?

Costs that are wholly and exclusively for the business: materials, business travel other than ordinary commuting, a proportion of home running costs, software, insurance, professional fees and bank charges. If your expenses are under £1,000 the trading allowance may be better, and we check both.

How do payments on account work?

If your bill is over £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax is collected at source, HMRC asks for two advance payments towards next year, due 31 January and 31 July, each half of this year's bill. We calculate both and show you how to reduce them if your income is falling.

How quickly can you file once I send my records?

Most straightforward returns are drafted within five working days of receiving complete records and filed the day you approve. In January we prioritise by deadline risk and tell you your slot when you book, so late bookers are not left guessing.

What does the £129 return cover?

A full SA100 with the supplementary pages for one income source, prepared, checked and filed online. Rental income, capital gains or several income sources move you to the £169 or £199 package, and we tell you which applies before we start, never on the invoice.

Is self assessment tax returns in Maesygwartha really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Maesygwartha pays and what a client in any other part of Wales pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Maesygwartha?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Maesygwartha and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for self assessment tax returns is the same in Maesygwartha as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
