Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Closing a company
A solvent company that has finished its purpose can be dissolved by voluntary strike-off: form DS01 with a £13 Companies House fee, after three months without trading and with all debts paid, final accounts and tax return filed, and assets distributed. HMRC objects to any application where returns or tax are outstanding, so the sequence matters more than the form.
Switching accountants
You can switch accountant at any point in the year. The new firm requests clearance and your records from the old one, which cannot withhold your own documents though it may hold its own working papers until its fees are settled. Agent authorisations with HMRC and Companies House are transferred, and the next deadline is picked up without a gap.
The trading and property allowances
Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.
Dormant companies
Dormancy is a status that is easy to lose. The strict rule is no accounting transactions other than share capital and Companies House fees, which means no bank account activity at all in practice. Fees should be paid personally by the director. A company that traded and has stopped becomes dormant only after its final trading accounts and tax return are filed and HMRC is told.
Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment
Workplace pension compliance is part of payroll, not separate from it. Each pay period the payroll assesses who is eligible, calculates employer and employee contributions on qualifying earnings between the lower and upper thresholds, and sends the contribution file to the scheme. The minimum total is 8%, and many employers choose to contribute more as a recruitment advantage.
Employer National Insurance
Employers pay National Insurance at 15% on each employee's earnings above the £5,000 secondary threshold, following the April 2025 changes. The Employment Allowance offsets up to £10,500 of this for eligible employers, which for a small team often removes the liability entirely, but companies where the director is the only employee do not qualify.
Allowable expenses
The expenses sole traders most often miss are home working costs, claimed by actual proportion or HMRC's flat rate, the business share of phone and internet, mileage at 45p for the first 10,000 business miles, and training that maintains existing skills. The ones most often claimed wrongly are commuting, entertaining customers and clothes that could be worn outside work.
Questions
Tax Planning questions from Lowestoft
Will you implement the recommendations?
Where the actions fall within our services, such as setting the payroll salary, documenting dividends, adjusting the company's pension contributions or making an election, yes, as part of those services. Where they need a financial adviser, for example choosing pension investments, we tell you what to ask them.
How often should planning be reviewed?
Annually, ideally in the first quarter of the tax year so that decisions have the full year to work. Thresholds and rates change each April, your income changes, and the company's profit changes. Clients in our monthly packages get a planning conversation as part of the Complete and Premium tiers.
How much tax will a review save me?
It depends entirely on your position, and we would rather not promise a number. Common findings are a director salary set years ago at the wrong level, pension headroom unused, a spouse's allowances wasted, dividends bunched into one tax year and capital allowances missed. For most directors the saving exceeds the fee several times; where it would not, we say so before you pay.
Do you recommend tax avoidance schemes?
No. We use established reliefs and allowances that Parliament intended: pensions, ISAs, spousal transfers, capital allowances, dividend and salary structuring, timing. We do not sell arrangements that depend on HMRC not noticing. If someone offers you a scheme that sounds too good, the £249 review will tell you why it probably is.
Is tax planning advice regulated?
Tax advice is not a reserved activity in the UK, so no regulator licenses it, but we are bound by our terms of business and the advice disclaimer on this site, and we carry professional indemnity insurance. Advice is given in writing so that you can rely on it and we can be held to it.
What do I need to provide?
Your last tax return, the company's last accounts and current management figures if you have them, pension statements, details of other income and your spouse's position if relevant, and an idea of what you want from the business over the next few years. We send a short checklist when you book.
Is tax planning in Lowestoft really the same price as elsewhere?
Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Lowestoft pays and what a client in any other part of England pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
Do you have an office in Lowestoft?
No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Lowestoft and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for tax planning is the same in Lowestoft as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
