Why IGI

Why Louth businesses file with IGI

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Louth clients know the fee for crypto tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Louth get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.

We serve Louth remotely by design: records by WhatsApp or email, drafts back for approval, filing electronic. The saving on premises is passed to you in the fee for crypto tax.

A named person handles your crypto tax from Louth and knows the file, so you are not re-explaining your business to a different helpdesk each time.

We explain crypto tax in the words Louth business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

Nothing is filed for Louth until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Switching accountants

Changing accountant is simpler than most people fear. You authorise the new firm, which writes to the old one for professional clearance and your records; the outgoing accountant must hand over your own documents and usually does within two weeks. The new firm registers as your agent with HMRC and picks up the next filing. There is no need to wait for a year end.

Closing a company

A solvent company that has finished its purpose can be dissolved by voluntary strike-off: form DS01 with a £13 Companies House fee, after three months without trading and with all debts paid, final accounts and tax return filed, and assets distributed. HMRC objects to any application where returns or tax are outstanding, so the sequence matters more than the form.

Salary versus dividends

Paying yourself from a company involves two routes with different tax treatment. Salary through payroll is a company expense and builds a National Insurance record; dividends come from post-tax profit at lower personal rates. Undocumented drawings that are neither become director's loans, with a 35.75% section 455 charge if not repaid within nine months of the year end.

Director's loan accounts

Money taken from a company has to be something: salary, dividend, expense reimbursement or loan. If it is a loan and remains outstanding nine months after the year end, the company pays tax at the dividend higher rate on it until it is repaid. Clearing the balance with a properly declared dividend before the deadline, where reserves allow, is routine year-end work.

The VAT registration threshold

VAT registration is compulsory once taxable turnover in any rolling twelve-month period exceeds £90,000, or when you expect to exceed that in the next thirty days alone. The test is rolling, not by tax year, and includes zero-rated sales. Businesses regularly cross it without noticing, and late registration means accounting for VAT on sales where it was never charged to customers.

Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief

Companies pay Corporation Tax at 19% on profits up to £50,000 and 25% on profits over £250,000. Between those figures marginal relief applies, producing an effective rate that rises gradually and a marginal rate of 26.5% on each pound in the band. The thresholds are divided by the number of associated companies, so a director with two companies has thresholds of £25,000 and £125,000 for each.

Late filing penalties

HMRC's penalties for a late Self Assessment return are automatic: £100 the day after 31 January, £10 a day from three months late up to £900, then the greater of £300 or 5% of the tax at six and twelve months. Interest and separate late-payment penalties apply to the tax itself. Companies House charges £150 to £1,500 for late accounts, doubling for a second consecutive year.

Questions

Crypto Tax questions from Louth

What are the Capital Gains Tax rates and allowance?

The annual exempt amount is £3,000 for 2026/27. Gains above it are taxed at 18% within your basic rate band and 24% above it. Losses in the year are set against gains automatically, and unused losses can be carried forward indefinitely if claimed on a return within four years.

Is staking income a capital gain?

No. Rewards from staking, lending, liquidity provision and most DeFi protocols are income when received, taxed at your income tax rate on the sterling value that day, and reported as miscellaneous income unless your activity amounts to a trade. The tokens then enter your pool at that value for a later capital gain or loss.

Do I pay tax if I never cashed out to pounds?

Usually yes. Swapping one cryptoasset for another, spending crypto on goods or services, and gifting it to anyone other than a spouse are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, valued in sterling at the time. Only moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposal. Most people's taxable events are swaps, not sales for cash.

How are gains calculated with so many purchases at different prices?

HMRC requires pooling: all units of the same token form one section 104 pool with an average cost, except that disposals are first matched against purchases on the same day and then against purchases within the following 30 days. We apply these rules across your entire history, which is impossible to do accurately by hand at any volume.

How is the fee set?

By transaction count. Up to 500 transactions across all exchanges and wallets is £199 for the report alone or £279 with your Self Assessment filed. Over 500 is £399. A response to an HMRC nudge letter, including the report and the reply, is £249. We confirm the band from your exports before starting.

I received an HMRC letter about crypto. What should I do?

Do not ignore it and do not reply without the figures. HMRC's nudge letters are sent where exchange data suggests undeclared activity. We prepare the full report, work out what should have been declared, and draft the response, including a voluntary disclosure where tax is owed, which reduces penalties substantially compared with being caught.

Do you have an office in Louth?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Louth and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for crypto tax is the same in Louth as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.

Is crypto tax in Louth really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Louth pays and what a client in any other part of England pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
