Local facts

About Livingston

Livingston is in Scotland, in the EH54 postcode district, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

The trading and property allowances

The first £1,000 of trading income and, separately, the first £1,000 of property income each year is tax free under the trading and property allowances. Below those figures no return is needed for that income. Above them you can deduct the £1,000 allowance instead of actual expenses if that is better, which suits side businesses and single-room lets with few costs.

Dormant companies

A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Auto-enrolment duties begin the day you take on your first employee, not when the Pensions Regulator writes to you. Eligible staff must be enrolled, contributions paid every pay period and re-enrolment carried out every three years. Director-only companies without employment contracts are usually exempt. Fines for non-compliance are fixed and escalating.

Employer National Insurance

The cost of an employee is more than the salary. Employer National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 a year, the 3% minimum pension contribution, holiday pay, equipment and management time all come on top. The Employment Allowance of £10,500 reduces the National Insurance for most employers with more than one person on the payroll.

Allowable expenses

Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.

Record keeping

Record keeping is a legal obligation with a penalty of up to £3,000 for failure, but its real value is in making every other filing cheaper and more defensible. Keep invoices, receipts, bank statements, mileage logs and any HMRC correspondence, digitally if you like, for five years after the relevant filing deadline for individuals and six years for companies and VAT.

The 60-day property CGT return

Selling UK residential property that was not your main home for the whole period of ownership triggers a separate Capital Gains Tax return, due within 60 days of completion along with payment of the tax. This is in addition to the annual Self Assessment. The gain is taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income band, after the £3,000 annual exempt amount.

Questions

Crypto Tax questions from Livingston

What if I am a trader rather than an investor?

HMRC rarely accepts that an individual is trading in crypto; the bar is very high and the badges of trade must be met. If you are trading, profits are income and losses are trading losses. For almost everyone the capital gains treatment applies, and we tell you plainly which side of the line you are on.

How far back do I need to go?

The pool cost of what you hold today depends on every purchase you have ever made, so the computation must start from your first transaction even if you only need to report recent years. If earlier years were under-reported, we quantify the position and advise on disclosure, which HMRC treats far more leniently than discovery.

Are NFTs treated the same as coins?

Each NFT is a separate asset, so pooling does not apply; the gain is proceeds less the cost of that specific token including gas fees. Creating and selling NFTs regularly may be trading income rather than capital gains. Royalties received are income. We classify each case from the facts.

Do I need to register for Self Assessment just for crypto?

If your total disposals exceed £50,000 in the year, or your gains exceed the £3,000 allowance, or you have taxable crypto income, yes. Register by 5 October after the tax year. Since 2024/25 the return has a dedicated section for cryptoassets. We handle registration where you are not already filing.

What do you need from me?

Full transaction exports from every exchange you have used, including closed accounts, and wallet addresses for on-chain activity. Partial history produces wrong pool costs, so completeness matters more than tidiness. We tell you exactly how to export from each major platform.

My exchange collapsed and I lost everything. Can I claim the loss?

Possibly. If the tokens still exist but you cannot access them, a negligible value claim may be available once the asset is effectively worthless. If the exchange is in administration you may need to wait for the outcome. We assess each case against HMRC's guidance and make the claim where it is supportable.

Is crypto tax in Livingston really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Livingston pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Livingston?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Livingston and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for crypto tax is the same in Livingston as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
