  1. Tell us your situation

A short message or call about what you do and what needs filing. We ask the questions that determine the right package and nothing more.

Records come by WhatsApp or email. We prepare the draft, explain the figures in plain English and answer your questions.

  4. We file, you get the receipts

Why IGI

The IGI way of working, in Hamilton

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Hamilton clients know the fee for crypto tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Hamilton get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Hamilton to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in Scotland; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in crypto tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Hamilton business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

We explain crypto tax in the words Hamilton business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

Nothing is filed for Hamilton until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Record keeping

Good records are the difference between a quick enquiry and a long one. For the self-employed, five years after the filing deadline; for companies, six years from the year end; for VAT, six years. Photographs of receipts, PDF statements and software exports all count. The requirement is to keep records, not paper, and a well-organised cloud folder satisfies it.

Allowable expenses

Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.

Crypto records and reporting

HMRC treats cryptoassets as property. Swapping one token for another, spending crypto or gifting it are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, and staking and lending rewards are income. Gains are computed under pooling rules with same-day and 30-day matching. From 2026 HMRC receives data from exchanges worldwide under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, so unreported activity is increasingly visible.

The 60-day property CGT return

Selling UK residential property that was not your main home for the whole period of ownership triggers a separate Capital Gains Tax return, due within 60 days of completion along with payment of the tax. This is in addition to the annual Self Assessment. The gain is taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income band, after the £3,000 annual exempt amount.

Dormant companies

Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.

The trading and property allowances

Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.

Employer National Insurance

Employers pay National Insurance at 15% on each employee's earnings above the £5,000 secondary threshold, following the April 2025 changes. The Employment Allowance offsets up to £10,500 of this for eligible employers, which for a small team often removes the liability entirely, but companies where the director is the only employee do not qualify.

Questions

Crypto Tax questions from Hamilton

Do I pay tax if I never cashed out to pounds?

Usually yes. Swapping one cryptoasset for another, spending crypto on goods or services, and gifting it to anyone other than a spouse are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, valued in sterling at the time. Only moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposal. Most people's taxable events are swaps, not sales for cash.

How are gains calculated with so many purchases at different prices?

HMRC requires pooling: all units of the same token form one section 104 pool with an average cost, except that disposals are first matched against purchases on the same day and then against purchases within the following 30 days. We apply these rules across your entire history, which is impossible to do accurately by hand at any volume.

What are the Capital Gains Tax rates and allowance?

The annual exempt amount is £3,000 for 2026/27. Gains above it are taxed at 18% within your basic rate band and 24% above it. Losses in the year are set against gains automatically, and unused losses can be carried forward indefinitely if claimed on a return within four years.

Is staking income a capital gain?

No. Rewards from staking, lending, liquidity provision and most DeFi protocols are income when received, taxed at your income tax rate on the sterling value that day, and reported as miscellaneous income unless your activity amounts to a trade. The tokens then enter your pool at that value for a later capital gain or loss.

My exchange collapsed and I lost everything. Can I claim the loss?

Possibly. If the tokens still exist but you cannot access them, a negligible value claim may be available once the asset is effectively worthless. If the exchange is in administration you may need to wait for the outcome. We assess each case against HMRC's guidance and make the claim where it is supportable.

What do you need from me?

Full transaction exports from every exchange you have used, including closed accounts, and wallet addresses for on-chain activity. Partial history produces wrong pool costs, so completeness matters more than tidiness. We tell you exactly how to export from each major platform.

The next four dates that apply to crypto tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Hamilton clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
