Why IGI

What you get in Halland

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Halland clients know the fee for self assessment tax returns before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Halland get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to self assessment tax returns.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Halland to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in self assessment tax returns: the person who prepared last year's work for your Halland business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Halland comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.

You stay in control of self assessment tax returns: drafts go to Halland clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Dormant companies

Dormancy is a status that is easy to lose. The strict rule is no accounting transactions other than share capital and Companies House fees, which means no bank account activity at all in practice. Fees should be paid personally by the director. A company that traded and has stopped becomes dormant only after its final trading accounts and tax return are filed and HMRC is told.

The trading and property allowances

Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.

Employer National Insurance

Since April 2025 employer National Insurance has been 15% on earnings above a £5,000 secondary threshold, a substantial increase for small employers. The Employment Allowance rose to £10,500 at the same time to soften it for the smallest businesses. Directors deciding their own salary weigh this cost against the Corporation Tax deduction a salary provides.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Workplace pension compliance is part of payroll, not separate from it. Each pay period the payroll assesses who is eligible, calculates employer and employee contributions on qualifying earnings between the lower and upper thresholds, and sends the contribution file to the scheme. The minimum total is 8%, and many employers choose to contribute more as a recruitment advantage.

Record keeping

HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.

Allowable expenses

An expense is allowable against trading profit if it is incurred wholly and exclusively for the business. Materials, business travel other than ordinary commuting, a proportion of home running costs, software, insurance, professional fees, bank charges and protective clothing qualify. Client entertainment, ordinary clothing, fines and the private share of mixed-use costs do not.

Crypto records and reporting

Most crypto holders have taxable events they do not recognise, because every swap is a disposal even when no pounds change hands. The computation requires the complete transaction history from every exchange and wallet, pooled by asset with HMRC's matching rules applied. Exchange-generated tax reports are frequently wrong because they cannot see transfers between a user's own wallets.

Questions

Self Assessment Tax Returns questions from Halland

Do you handle Scottish or Welsh income tax?

Yes. Scottish taxpayers have six bands from 19% to 48% and Welsh taxpayers have Welsh rates set by the Senedd, both applied automatically from the residence HMRC holds for you. We check that address is right, because an out-of-date one is a common cause of wrong tax codes.

What records should I keep, and for how long?

Invoices, bank statements, receipts, P60s and P45s, dividend vouchers and any HMRC letters. Keep them for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to. Photos and PDFs are acceptable to HMRC; paper is not required.

Can you deal with HMRC on my behalf?

Once you authorise us as your agent we can speak to HMRC about your return, see your account and respond to letters about the return we filed. The authorisation is free, done through your Government Gateway or a code HMRC posts to you, and takes a few days to activate.

Do I pay before or after filing?

The fee is invoiced when you approve the draft, before we file. Nothing is submitted to HMRC until it is paid and you have confirmed every figure, and you receive HMRC's submission receipt within minutes of filing.

How do payments on account work?

If your bill is over £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax is collected at source, HMRC asks for two advance payments towards next year, due 31 January and 31 July, each half of this year's bill. We calculate both and show you how to reduce them if your income is falling.

Which expenses can I claim as a sole trader?

Costs that are wholly and exclusively for the business: materials, business travel other than ordinary commuting, a proportion of home running costs, software, insurance, professional fees and bank charges. If your expenses are under £1,000 the trading allowance may be better, and we check both.

Which deadlines matter most for self assessment tax returns?

The next four dates that apply to self assessment tax returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Halland clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
