Local facts

About Halket

Halket is in Scotland, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Late filing penalties

Penalties are the clearest reason to work to deadlines. A Self Assessment return one day late costs £100 regardless of whether any tax is due; three months late adds £10 a day. Late company accounts start at £150 and reach £1,500, and double if the previous year was also late. None of this is negotiable afterwards except through a narrow reasonable-excuse appeal.

Payments on account

Payments on account catch out most people in their second year of self-employment. HMRC assumes next year's tax will match this year's and collects half in January and half in July, in advance, on top of the balancing payment. If profits are dropping you can apply to reduce them, but reducing them too far attracts interest. We calculate the right figure rather than guessing.

The Self Assessment calendar

Self Assessment runs on a fixed annual cycle. Registration by 5 October following the tax year, online filing and payment by 31 January, and a second instalment on 31 July for those making payments on account. The penalties for lateness are automatic and escalate monthly, which is why we file early and chase approvals well before the window closes.

Closing a company

Voluntary strike-off is available only to solvent companies. One that owes money it cannot pay needs a creditors' voluntary liquidation through a licensed insolvency practitioner, and directors who dissolve an insolvent company face personal consequences. For a solvent company the process takes three to four months from filing the DS01, with notice to creditors and shareholders within seven days.

Switching accountants

You can switch accountant at any point in the year. The new firm requests clearance and your records from the old one, which cannot withhold your own documents though it may hold its own working papers until its fees are settled. Agent authorisations with HMRC and Companies House are transferred, and the next deadline is picked up without a gap.

Allowable expenses

The expenses sole traders most often miss are home working costs, claimed by actual proportion or HMRC's flat rate, the business share of phone and internet, mileage at 45p for the first 10,000 business miles, and training that maintains existing skills. The ones most often claimed wrongly are commuting, entertaining customers and clothes that could be worn outside work.

Record keeping

HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.

Questions

Self Assessment Tax Returns questions from Halket

Will Making Tax Digital change my return?

From April 2026 sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 send quarterly updates to HMRC through software, with the £30,000 threshold following in April 2027. The year-end return becomes a final declaration. We set this up through our bookkeeping service when it applies to you.

What happens after you file?

You receive HMRC's submission receipt, a PDF of the return, the tax computation and a payment schedule with HMRC's bank details and your payment reference. We diarise next year's deadlines for you and send reminders before each one.

I am employed and have a small side income. Do I need a return?

If the side income is under £1,000 a year the trading allowance covers it and no return is needed. Above that you must register and file. If the side income is the only reason for the return, the £129 package applies and we make sure your PAYE figures from the P60 are reconciled correctly.

What records should I keep, and for how long?

Invoices, bank statements, receipts, P60s and P45s, dividend vouchers and any HMRC letters. Keep them for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to. Photos and PDFs are acceptable to HMRC; paper is not required.

Do you handle Scottish or Welsh income tax?

Yes. Scottish taxpayers have six bands from 19% to 48% and Welsh taxpayers have Welsh rates set by the Senedd, both applied automatically from the residence HMRC holds for you. We check that address is right, because an out-of-date one is a common cause of wrong tax codes.

How quickly can you file once I send my records?

Most straightforward returns are drafted within five working days of receiving complete records and filed the day you approve. In January we prioritise by deadline risk and tell you your slot when you book, so late bookers are not left guessing.

Is self assessment tax returns in Halket really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Halket pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Halket?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Halket and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for self assessment tax returns is the same in Halket as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
