Local facts

About Gretna Green

Gretna Green is in Scotland, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

The trading and property allowances

Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.

Dormant companies

Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Auto-enrolment duties begin the day you take on your first employee, not when the Pensions Regulator writes to you. Eligible staff must be enrolled, contributions paid every pay period and re-enrolment carried out every three years. Director-only companies without employment contracts are usually exempt. Fines for non-compliance are fixed and escalating.

Employer National Insurance

Employers pay National Insurance at 15% on each employee's earnings above the £5,000 secondary threshold, following the April 2025 changes. The Employment Allowance offsets up to £10,500 of this for eligible employers, which for a small team often removes the liability entirely, but companies where the director is the only employee do not qualify.

Allowable expenses

The expenses sole traders most often miss are home working costs, claimed by actual proportion or HMRC's flat rate, the business share of phone and internet, mileage at 45p for the first 10,000 business miles, and training that maintains existing skills. The ones most often claimed wrongly are commuting, entertaining customers and clothes that could be worn outside work.

Record keeping

Good records are the difference between a quick enquiry and a long one. For the self-employed, five years after the filing deadline; for companies, six years from the year end; for VAT, six years. Photographs of receipts, PDF statements and software exports all count. The requirement is to keep records, not paper, and a well-organised cloud folder satisfies it.

The 60-day property CGT return

Since April 2020 a gain on UK residential property must be reported and the tax paid within 60 days of completion through HMRC's dedicated service, separately from the annual return. Non-residents must report all UK land disposals in the same window whether or not tax is due. Getting the computation right first time matters because the figure is then carried into the Self Assessment.

Questions

Self Assessment Tax Returns questions from Gretna Green

Will Making Tax Digital change my return?

From April 2026 sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 send quarterly updates to HMRC through software, with the £30,000 threshold following in April 2027. The year-end return becomes a final declaration. We set this up through our bookkeeping service when it applies to you.

What happens after you file?

You receive HMRC's submission receipt, a PDF of the return, the tax computation and a payment schedule with HMRC's bank details and your payment reference. We diarise next year's deadlines for you and send reminders before each one.

I am employed and have a small side income. Do I need a return?

If the side income is under £1,000 a year the trading allowance covers it and no return is needed. Above that you must register and file. If the side income is the only reason for the return, the £129 package applies and we make sure your PAYE figures from the P60 are reconciled correctly.

What records should I keep, and for how long?

Invoices, bank statements, receipts, P60s and P45s, dividend vouchers and any HMRC letters. Keep them for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to. Photos and PDFs are acceptable to HMRC; paper is not required.

Do you handle Scottish or Welsh income tax?

Yes. Scottish taxpayers have six bands from 19% to 48% and Welsh taxpayers have Welsh rates set by the Senedd, both applied automatically from the residence HMRC holds for you. We check that address is right, because an out-of-date one is a common cause of wrong tax codes.

Do I pay before or after filing?

The fee is invoiced when you approve the draft, before we file. Nothing is submitted to HMRC until it is paid and you have confirmed every figure, and you receive HMRC's submission receipt within minutes of filing.

Is self assessment tax returns in Gretna Green really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Gretna Green pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Gretna Green?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Gretna Green and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for self assessment tax returns is the same in Gretna Green as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
