Local facts

About Galltegfa

Galltegfa is in Wales, Wales. Businesses in Wales file with the same HMRC and Companies House as England, and for now the Welsh rates of income tax equal the English ones, though the Senedd can vary them. The practical differences are Land Transaction Tax on property and Welsh-specific business support schemes, and company names and documents may be in Welsh.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Closing a company

Voluntary strike-off is available only to solvent companies. One that owes money it cannot pay needs a creditors' voluntary liquidation through a licensed insolvency practitioner, and directors who dissolve an insolvent company face personal consequences. For a solvent company the process takes three to four months from filing the DS01, with notice to creditors and shareholders within seven days.

Switching accountants

The main reasons people switch accountant are surprise invoices, missed deadlines and not understanding what they are being told. Switching involves a clearance letter between the firms, a transfer of records and agent authorisations, and a short handover of the current position. It takes about two weeks and should cost nothing extra.

The trading and property allowances

Not every small income needs a tax return. The trading allowance exempts the first £1,000 of self-employment or casual income and the property allowance does the same for rental income, each measured on gross receipts. They cannot be combined with rent-a-room relief on the same income, and claiming the allowance means giving up the expense deduction for that source.

Dormant companies

Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Workplace pension compliance is part of payroll, not separate from it. Each pay period the payroll assesses who is eligible, calculates employer and employee contributions on qualifying earnings between the lower and upper thresholds, and sends the contribution file to the scheme. The minimum total is 8%, and many employers choose to contribute more as a recruitment advantage.

Employer National Insurance

Since April 2025 employer National Insurance has been 15% on earnings above a £5,000 secondary threshold, a substantial increase for small employers. The Employment Allowance rose to £10,500 at the same time to soften it for the smallest businesses. Directors deciding their own salary weigh this cost against the Corporation Tax deduction a salary provides.

Allowable expenses

An expense is allowable against trading profit if it is incurred wholly and exclusively for the business. Materials, business travel other than ordinary commuting, a proportion of home running costs, software, insurance, professional fees, bank charges and protective clothing qualify. Client entertainment, ordinary clothing, fines and the private share of mixed-use costs do not.

Questions

Self Assessment Tax Returns questions from Galltegfa

What does the £129 return cover?

A full SA100 with the supplementary pages for one income source, prepared, checked and filed online. Rental income, capital gains or several income sources move you to the £169 or £199 package, and we tell you which applies before we start, never on the invoice.

What if my return is late?

We file late returns at the £179 rescue fee, which includes drafting a reasonable-excuse appeal where the facts support one. The £100 automatic penalty is HMRC's, not ours, and we tell you honestly whether an appeal has a realistic chance before you pay for it.

I have never filed before. Do I need a UTR first?

Yes. If you have not registered we handle the registration as part of the job and HMRC posts your Unique Taxpayer Reference within about ten working days. Start early if your first deadline is close, because HMRC will not accept a return without it.

What records should I keep, and for how long?

Invoices, bank statements, receipts, P60s and P45s, dividend vouchers and any HMRC letters. Keep them for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to. Photos and PDFs are acceptable to HMRC; paper is not required.

Do you handle Scottish or Welsh income tax?

Yes. Scottish taxpayers have six bands from 19% to 48% and Welsh taxpayers have Welsh rates set by the Senedd, both applied automatically from the residence HMRC holds for you. We check that address is right, because an out-of-date one is a common cause of wrong tax codes.

Will Making Tax Digital change my return?

From April 2026 sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 send quarterly updates to HMRC through software, with the £30,000 threshold following in April 2027. The year-end return becomes a final declaration. We set this up through our bookkeeping service when it applies to you.

Is self assessment tax returns in Galltegfa really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Galltegfa pays and what a client in any other part of Wales pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Galltegfa?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Galltegfa and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for self assessment tax returns is the same in Galltegfa as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
