About Frog Lane

Frog Lane is in Wales, Wales. Businesses in Wales file with the same HMRC and Companies House as England, and for now the Welsh rates of income tax equal the English ones, though the Senedd can vary them. The practical differences are Land Transaction Tax on property and Welsh-specific business support schemes, and company names and documents may be in Welsh.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, extends to those over £30,000 in April 2027 and is planned for £20,000 in April 2028. It requires digital records in compatible software and four quarterly updates to HMRC each year, with a final declaration replacing the traditional return. Payment dates are unchanged.

Late filing penalties

HMRC's penalties for a late Self Assessment return are automatic: £100 the day after 31 January, £10 a day from three months late up to £900, then the greater of £300 or 5% of the tax at six and twelve months. Interest and separate late-payment penalties apply to the tax itself. Companies House charges £150 to £1,500 for late accounts, doubling for a second consecutive year.

Payments on account

If your Self Assessment bill exceeds £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax was collected at source, HMRC asks for two advance payments towards the following year, each half of the current bill, due 31 January and 31 July. The first year this happens the January payment is effectively one and a half times the bill. We model it in advance and show you how to reduce the payments if income is falling.

The Self Assessment calendar

Self Assessment runs on a fixed annual cycle. Registration by 5 October following the tax year, online filing and payment by 31 January, and a second instalment on 31 July for those making payments on account. The penalties for lateness are automatic and escalate monthly, which is why we file early and chase approvals well before the window closes.

Director's loan accounts

Money taken from a company has to be something: salary, dividend, expense reimbursement or loan. If it is a loan and remains outstanding nine months after the year end, the company pays tax at the dividend higher rate on it until it is repaid. Clearing the balance with a properly declared dividend before the deadline, where reserves allow, is routine year-end work.

Salary versus dividends

Paying yourself from a company involves two routes with different tax treatment. Salary through payroll is a company expense and builds a National Insurance record; dividends come from post-tax profit at lower personal rates. Undocumented drawings that are neither become director's loans, with a 35.75% section 455 charge if not repaid within nine months of the year end.

Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief

Corporation Tax is not a flat rate. Profits to £50,000 pay 19%, profits above £250,000 pay 25%, and the band between is taxed at an effective marginal rate of 26.5% through the marginal relief mechanism. Associated companies share the thresholds, which catches directors who own more than one company and is the most common cause of underpaid tax in owner-managed groups.

Questions

Limited Company Accounts questions from Frog Lane

What if my year end is awkward or I want to change it?

You can shorten your accounting period as often as you like and extend it once every five years, by filing form AA01 with Companies House. Extending a period can push the first filing deadline back. We advise on this before the first year end if it helps, at no extra charge.

What rate of Corporation Tax will my company pay?

Profits up to £50,000 are taxed at the 19% small profits rate, profits over £250,000 at the 25% main rate, with marginal relief in between so the effective rate rises gradually. The thresholds are divided by the number of associated companies, which catches directors who own more than one company.

Do you file with iXBRL?

Yes. Both Companies House and HMRC require accounts and computations in iXBRL format, which tags every figure electronically. We produce and validate the tagged files as part of the service; you never see or pay for this separately.

My company is dormant. Do I still need accounts?

Yes. A dormant company still files annual accounts with Companies House, in the simplified AA02 format, and a confirmation statement. Our dormant accounts fee is £49. HMRC usually does not require a CT600 once told the company is dormant, and we handle that notification.

Can you include my personal tax return?

The £389 bundle covers micro-entity accounts, the CT600 and the director's Self Assessment return together. It is cheaper than buying them separately and ensures the dividends and salary on the personal return match the company's records exactly.

Does the fee include Corporation Tax?

Yes. Both the £299 micro-entity and £449 small company packages include the Corporation Tax computation, the CT600 and electronic filing with HMRC. The standalone CT600 at £199 is for companies whose accounts are prepared elsewhere.

Is limited company accounts in Frog Lane really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Frog Lane pays and what a client in any other part of Wales pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Frog Lane?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Frog Lane and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for limited company accounts is the same in Frog Lane as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
