Why Eskadale businesses file with IGI
The price for self assessment tax returns is published on this page and is what a client in Eskadale pays. We confirm it in writing first, and the invoice matches the quote.
Deadline-first: the dates that matter for self assessment tax returns are shown at the top of this page, diarised for every Eskadale client and chased before they arrive.
Online only, UK based. There is no office in Eskadale to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in Scotland; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.
Continuity matters in self assessment tax returns: the person who prepared last year's work for your Eskadale business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment
Every employer must assess its workers for automatic enrolment from the first employee's start date. Those aged 22 to State Pension age earning over £10,000 a year must be enrolled into a qualifying pension with minimum contributions of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% from the employer, and a declaration of compliance made to the Pensions Regulator within five months.
Dormant companies
Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.
The trading and property allowances
Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.
Late filing penalties
Lateness is expensive in a way that compounds. For individuals, £100 immediately, then daily penalties, then percentage-based ones at six and twelve months, with interest running on unpaid tax throughout. For companies, Companies House penalties scale with delay and double on repeat, and HMRC adds its own for a late CT600. Filing on time is the cheapest tax planning there is.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, extends to those over £30,000 in April 2027 and is planned for £20,000 in April 2028. It requires digital records in compatible software and four quarterly updates to HMRC each year, with a final declaration replacing the traditional return. Payment dates are unchanged.
The Self Assessment calendar
Self Assessment runs on a fixed annual cycle. Registration by 5 October following the tax year, online filing and payment by 31 January, and a second instalment on 31 July for those making payments on account. The penalties for lateness are automatic and escalate monthly, which is why we file early and chase approvals well before the window closes.
Payments on account
A common surprise in Self Assessment is the January payment that is far larger than expected. That is the balancing payment for the year just ended plus the first payment on account for the year ahead, which HMRC sets at half of the bill just calculated. We put the figure in your hands months ahead and tell you how to adjust it legitimately when circumstances change.
Questions
Self Assessment Tax Returns questions from Eskadale
Do you handle Scottish or Welsh income tax?
Yes. Scottish taxpayers have six bands from 19% to 48% and Welsh taxpayers have Welsh rates set by the Senedd, both applied automatically from the residence HMRC holds for you. We check that address is right, because an out-of-date one is a common cause of wrong tax codes.
What records should I keep, and for how long?
Invoices, bank statements, receipts, P60s and P45s, dividend vouchers and any HMRC letters. Keep them for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to. Photos and PDFs are acceptable to HMRC; paper is not required.
How do payments on account work?
If your bill is over £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax is collected at source, HMRC asks for two advance payments towards next year, due 31 January and 31 July, each half of this year's bill. We calculate both and show you how to reduce them if your income is falling.
Which expenses can I claim as a sole trader?
Costs that are wholly and exclusively for the business: materials, business travel other than ordinary commuting, a proportion of home running costs, software, insurance, professional fees and bank charges. If your expenses are under £1,000 the trading allowance may be better, and we check both.
Can you deal with HMRC on my behalf?
Once you authorise us as your agent we can speak to HMRC about your return, see your account and respond to letters about the return we filed. The authorisation is free, done through your Government Gateway or a code HMRC posts to you, and takes a few days to activate.
Do I pay before or after filing?
The fee is invoiced when you approve the draft, before we file. Nothing is submitted to HMRC until it is paid and you have confirmed every figure, and you receive HMRC's submission receipt within minutes of filing.
Do you have an office in Eskadale?
No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Eskadale and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for self assessment tax returns is the same in Eskadale as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
Is self assessment tax returns in Eskadale really the same price as elsewhere?
Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Eskadale pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
