Why IGI

What you get in Downe

One fixed fee for crypto tax in Downe, agreed in writing before any work starts and never changed part-way through the job, however long it takes us.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Downe get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.

We serve Downe remotely by design: records by WhatsApp or email, drafts back for approval, filing electronic. The saving on premises is passed to you in the fee for crypto tax.

Continuity matters in crypto tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Downe business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

We explain crypto tax in the words Downe business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

You stay in control of crypto tax: drafts go to Downe clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Auto-enrolment duties begin the day you take on your first employee, not when the Pensions Regulator writes to you. Eligible staff must be enrolled, contributions paid every pay period and re-enrolment carried out every three years. Director-only companies without employment contracts are usually exempt. Fines for non-compliance are fixed and escalating.

Employer National Insurance

Since April 2025 employer National Insurance has been 15% on earnings above a £5,000 secondary threshold, a substantial increase for small employers. The Employment Allowance rose to £10,500 at the same time to soften it for the smallest businesses. Directors deciding their own salary weigh this cost against the Corporation Tax deduction a salary provides.

The trading and property allowances

Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.

Dormant companies

A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.

The 60-day property CGT return

Since April 2020 a gain on UK residential property must be reported and the tax paid within 60 days of completion through HMRC's dedicated service, separately from the annual return. Non-residents must report all UK land disposals in the same window whether or not tax is due. Getting the computation right first time matters because the figure is then carried into the Self Assessment.

Crypto records and reporting

Crypto tax splits into capital gains on disposals and income on rewards, with different rates and different reporting. The £3,000 annual exempt amount and the 18% and 24% rates apply to gains; staking, mining and airdrop income is taxed at marginal income tax rates. HMRC's nudge letters to holders have increased sharply, and a voluntary disclosure before one arrives is treated far more leniently.

Allowable expenses

Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.

Questions

Crypto Tax questions from Downe

Is staking income a capital gain?

No. Rewards from staking, lending, liquidity provision and most DeFi protocols are income when received, taxed at your income tax rate on the sterling value that day, and reported as miscellaneous income unless your activity amounts to a trade. The tokens then enter your pool at that value for a later capital gain or loss.

What are the Capital Gains Tax rates and allowance?

The annual exempt amount is £3,000 for 2026/27. Gains above it are taxed at 18% within your basic rate band and 24% above it. Losses in the year are set against gains automatically, and unused losses can be carried forward indefinitely if claimed on a return within four years.

How are gains calculated with so many purchases at different prices?

HMRC requires pooling: all units of the same token form one section 104 pool with an average cost, except that disposals are first matched against purchases on the same day and then against purchases within the following 30 days. We apply these rules across your entire history, which is impossible to do accurately by hand at any volume.

Do I pay tax if I never cashed out to pounds?

Usually yes. Swapping one cryptoasset for another, spending crypto on goods or services, and gifting it to anyone other than a spouse are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, valued in sterling at the time. Only moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposal. Most people's taxable events are swaps, not sales for cash.

I received an HMRC letter about crypto. What should I do?

Do not ignore it and do not reply without the figures. HMRC's nudge letters are sent where exchange data suggests undeclared activity. We prepare the full report, work out what should have been declared, and draft the response, including a voluntary disclosure where tax is owed, which reduces penalties substantially compared with being caught.

How is the fee set?

By transaction count. Up to 500 transactions across all exchanges and wallets is £199 for the report alone or £279 with your Self Assessment filed. Over 500 is £399. A response to an HMRC nudge letter, including the report and the reply, is £249. We confirm the band from your exports before starting.

How do I get started from Downe?

Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for crypto tax. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Downe clients are set up within a day.

Which deadlines matter most for crypto tax?

The next four dates that apply to crypto tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Downe clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
