How it works

Sole Trader Accounts from Dolywern, step by step

  1. Tell us your situation

A short message or call about what you do and what needs filing. We ask the questions that determine the right package and nothing more.

  2. Fixed fee in writing

You receive one price for the work, confirmed by email before anything starts. It does not change if the job takes longer than we expected.

  3. Send records, review the draft

Records come by WhatsApp or email. We prepare the draft, explain the figures in plain English and answer your questions.

  4. We file, you get the receipts

Once you approve and the fee is settled, we submit electronically and forward the HMRC or Companies House acknowledgement the same day.

Why IGI

What you get in Dolywern

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Dolywern clients know the fee for sole trader accounts before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Dolywern get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to sole trader accounts.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Dolywern to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in Wales; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in sole trader accounts: the person who prepared last year's work for your Dolywern business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

We explain sole trader accounts in the words Dolywern business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.

Nothing is filed for Dolywern until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

About Dolywern

Dolywern is in Wales, Wales. Welsh taxpayers pay Welsh rates of income tax, set by the Senedd and currently matching the English bands, collected under a C-prefixed tax code. Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Confirmation statements and identity verification

Companies House has tightened its requirements under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act: every company needs a registered email address and an appropriate registered office, every statement includes a lawful-purpose declaration, and every director and PSC must verify their identity. The confirmation statement, due annually with a £50 fee, is where most of this is confirmed.

CIS deductions

The Construction Industry Scheme affects both sides of a construction payment. Contractors must verify subcontractors, deduct the right amount, issue statements and file monthly, with penalties from £100 for each late return. Subcontractors suffer deductions on turnover and recover the excess at the year end. Limited company subcontractors offset deductions against PAYE monthly instead.

The Self Assessment calendar

Four dates govern Self Assessment: 5 October to register, 31 October for paper returns, 31 January to file online and pay, and 31 July for the second payment on account. Missing the January date triggers an automatic £100 penalty before any tax is even considered, so we treat it as the fixed point around which the rest of the year is planned.

Payments on account

Payments on account catch out most people in their second year of self-employment. HMRC assumes next year's tax will match this year's and collects half in January and half in July, in advance, on top of the balancing payment. If profits are dropping you can apply to reduce them, but reducing them too far attracts interest. We calculate the right figure rather than guessing.

Late filing penalties

Penalties are the clearest reason to work to deadlines. A Self Assessment return one day late costs £100 regardless of whether any tax is due; three months late adds £10 a day. Late company accounts start at £150 and reach £1,500, and double if the previous year was also late. None of this is negotiable afterwards except through a narrow reasonable-excuse appeal.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

The biggest change to Self Assessment in a generation is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, now live for higher-earning sole traders and landlords and arriving for the rest in stages. Quarterly updates are due by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, built from digital records. The practical consequence is that spreadsheet-and-shoebox bookkeeping is ending for anyone above the threshold.

The VAT registration threshold

VAT registration is compulsory once taxable turnover in any rolling twelve-month period exceeds £90,000, or when you expect to exceed that in the next thirty days alone. The test is rolling, not by tax year, and includes zero-rated sales. Businesses regularly cross it without noticing, and late registration means accounting for VAT on sales where it was never charged to customers.

Questions

Sole Trader Accounts questions from Dolywern

What if HMRC checks my return?

HMRC can enquire into a return within twelve months of filing, and longer if something was omitted. Well-prepared accounts with organised records are the best protection. If an enquiry opens, routine correspondence about a return we filed is handled free, and formal enquiries go through our fixed-fee investigation service.

Can you deal with my previous accountant?

Yes. Once you authorise us we write for professional clearance and your records, including the previous year's accounts and capital allowance pools, which we need for continuity. Most firms respond within two weeks and nothing about switching changes our fee.

I started trading part-way through the year. What is my first accounting period?

Since the basis period reform, sole traders are taxed on profits of the tax year, 6 April to 5 April, regardless of accounting date. A first period runs from your start date to 5 April. If you prefer a different accounting date we apportion the profits, but for most new traders a 5 April year end is simplest.

Should I become a limited company?

It depends on profit level, how much you need to draw, liability exposure and whether you want to retain profits. At modest profits the saving is small after the extra compliance cost; at higher profits incorporation can help. Our free comparison tool gives a first view and the tax planning review gives a definitive one.

What is the difference between the £149 and £249 fees?

The £149 fee applies when your records are already organised: bookkeeping software, a spreadsheet that reconciles to the bank, or our own monthly bookkeeping. The £249 fee covers rebuilding the year from bank statements and loose receipts. We look at what you have before quoting so the fee is fixed from the start.

Do I need accounts as well as a tax return?

HMRC requires a profit figure on the self-employment pages, and the accounts are how that figure is produced and supported. Very small businesses can complete the three-line account on the return, but once turnover is meaningful, proper accounts protect you in an enquiry and show you how the business is actually doing. The £229 bundle includes both.

Which deadlines matter most for sole trader accounts?

The next four dates that apply to sole trader accounts are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Dolywern clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
