Why IGI
The IGI way of working, in Derby
No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Derby clients know the fee for crypto tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.
We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Derby get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.
Online only, UK based. There is no office in Derby to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.
Continuity matters in crypto tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Derby business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
We explain crypto tax in the words Derby business owners use, not in accountant's shorthand, and we show our working so you can check it.
Nothing is filed for Derby until you have reviewed and approved it. You see the draft, you ask questions, you sign off, then we submit and send you the receipt.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Confirmation statements and identity verification
Companies House has tightened its requirements under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act: every company needs a registered email address and an appropriate registered office, every statement includes a lawful-purpose declaration, and every director and PSC must verify their identity. The confirmation statement, due annually with a £50 fee, is where most of this is confirmed.
CIS deductions
CIS turns construction subcontractors into advance taxpayers: a fifth of every labour payment goes to HMRC before they see it. Registering keeps the rate at 20% rather than 30%; gross payment status, for established businesses with a clean record, removes deductions altogether. The annual return is where the overpayment comes back, and filing it early brings the refund sooner.
The Self Assessment calendar
Self Assessment runs on a fixed annual cycle. Registration by 5 October following the tax year, online filing and payment by 31 January, and a second instalment on 31 July for those making payments on account. The penalties for lateness are automatic and escalate monthly, which is why we file early and chase approvals well before the window closes.
Payments on account
A common surprise in Self Assessment is the January payment that is far larger than expected. That is the balancing payment for the year just ended plus the first payment on account for the year ahead, which HMRC sets at half of the bill just calculated. We put the figure in your hands months ahead and tell you how to adjust it legitimately when circumstances change.
Late filing penalties
Penalties are the clearest reason to work to deadlines. A Self Assessment return one day late costs £100 regardless of whether any tax is due; three months late adds £10 a day. Late company accounts start at £150 and reach £1,500, and double if the previous year was also late. None of this is negotiable afterwards except through a narrow reasonable-excuse appeal.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, extends to those over £30,000 in April 2027 and is planned for £20,000 in April 2028. It requires digital records in compatible software and four quarterly updates to HMRC each year, with a final declaration replacing the traditional return. Payment dates are unchanged.
The VAT registration threshold
The £90,000 VAT threshold is measured over any twelve consecutive months, which is why a strong quarter can tip a business over unexpectedly. Registration must follow within thirty days of the end of the month the threshold was crossed. Below the threshold, voluntary registration is worth considering when customers are VAT-registered businesses and costs carry VAT.
Questions
Crypto Tax questions from Derby
How far back do I need to go?
The pool cost of what you hold today depends on every purchase you have ever made, so the computation must start from your first transaction even if you only need to report recent years. If earlier years were under-reported, we quantify the position and advise on disclosure, which HMRC treats far more leniently than discovery.
What if I am a trader rather than an investor?
HMRC rarely accepts that an individual is trading in crypto; the bar is very high and the badges of trade must be met. If you are trading, profits are income and losses are trading losses. For almost everyone the capital gains treatment applies, and we tell you plainly which side of the line you are on.
Do I need to register for Self Assessment just for crypto?
If your total disposals exceed £50,000 in the year, or your gains exceed the £3,000 allowance, or you have taxable crypto income, yes. Register by 5 October after the tax year. Since 2024/25 the return has a dedicated section for cryptoassets. We handle registration where you are not already filing.
Are NFTs treated the same as coins?
Each NFT is a separate asset, so pooling does not apply; the gain is proceeds less the cost of that specific token including gas fees. Creating and selling NFTs regularly may be trading income rather than capital gains. Royalties received are income. We classify each case from the facts.
Do I pay tax if I never cashed out to pounds?
Usually yes. Swapping one cryptoasset for another, spending crypto on goods or services, and gifting it to anyone other than a spouse are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, valued in sterling at the time. Only moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposal. Most people's taxable events are swaps, not sales for cash.
How are gains calculated with so many purchases at different prices?
HMRC requires pooling: all units of the same token form one section 104 pool with an average cost, except that disposals are first matched against purchases on the same day and then against purchases within the following 30 days. We apply these rules across your entire history, which is impossible to do accurately by hand at any volume.
Which deadlines matter most for crypto tax?
The next four dates that apply to crypto tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Derby clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
