Why IGI
What you get in Dayhills
No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Dayhills clients know the fee for vat returns before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.
We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Dayhills get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to vat returns.
Online only, UK based. There is no office in Dayhills to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.
Continuity matters in vat returns: the person who prepared last year's work for your Dayhills business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Dayhills comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.
You stay in control of vat returns: drafts go to Dayhills clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Confirmation statements and identity verification
The confirmation statement is the annual check that the public register is right: officers, registered office, SIC codes, shareholders and the PSC register. It carries a £50 fee and no financial penalty for lateness, but failure to file leads to compulsory strike-off. The identity verification regime introduced in November 2025 has added a further check to every statement.
CIS deductions
The Construction Industry Scheme affects both sides of a construction payment. Contractors must verify subcontractors, deduct the right amount, issue statements and file monthly, with penalties from £100 for each late return. Subcontractors suffer deductions on turnover and recover the excess at the year end. Limited company subcontractors offset deductions against PAYE monthly instead.
Switching accountants
The main reasons people switch accountant are surprise invoices, missed deadlines and not understanding what they are being told. Switching involves a clearance letter between the firms, a transfer of records and agent authorisations, and a short handover of the current position. It takes about two weeks and should cost nothing extra.
Closing a company
Voluntary strike-off is available only to solvent companies. One that owes money it cannot pay needs a creditors' voluntary liquidation through a licensed insolvency practitioner, and directors who dissolve an insolvent company face personal consequences. For a solvent company the process takes three to four months from filing the DS01, with notice to creditors and shareholders within seven days.
Dormant companies
A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.
The trading and property allowances
Not every small income needs a tax return. The trading allowance exempts the first £1,000 of self-employment or casual income and the property allowance does the same for rental income, each measured on gross receipts. They cannot be combined with rent-a-room relief on the same income, and claiming the allowance means giving up the expense deduction for that source.
Employer National Insurance
Employers pay National Insurance at 15% on each employee's earnings above the £5,000 secondary threshold, following the April 2025 changes. The Employment Allowance offsets up to £10,500 of this for eligible employers, which for a small team often removes the liability entirely, but companies where the director is the only employee do not qualify.
Questions
VAT Returns questions from Dayhills
Can I deregister if my turnover falls?
If your taxable turnover will be under £88,000 in the next 12 months you can apply to deregister. You may owe VAT on stock and assets held at the date of deregistration if their value is over £1,000 in VAT terms. We check the numbers and handle the application if it makes sense.
What if I have made an error on a previous return?
Errors under £10,000, or under 1% of turnover up to £50,000, can be corrected on the next return. Larger errors need a separate disclosure to HMRC on form VAT652. We quantify the error, advise on the right route and prepare the correction, with the fee agreed before we start.
What happens if a return is late?
HMRC's points-based system gives one penalty point per late return; at four points (for quarterly filers) each further late return costs £200. Late payment penalties start at 3% of the tax after 15 days, with daily interest from day one. We file on time if we have your records; late-filer rescues are £99 per return.
Can I claim VAT on everything the business buys?
Only on purchases used for making taxable supplies, with a valid VAT invoice. Business entertainment, most cars and anything with private use are restricted or blocked. If you make some exempt supplies, partial exemption rules limit recovery. We check these before each return.
How does the domestic reverse charge affect construction businesses?
Since March 2021, VAT-registered subcontractors supplying construction services to VAT-registered contractors within CIS do not charge VAT; the contractor accounts for it. Invoices must say so. Getting this wrong in either direction is common and we check every construction client's invoices against the rule.
I sell online through marketplaces. Who accounts for the VAT?
For goods sold to UK consumers through an online marketplace by an overseas seller, the marketplace accounts for the VAT. UK-based sellers account for their own. Imports, low-value consignments and sales to EU customers each have specific rules, and our e-commerce specialists handle the detail.
Which deadlines matter most for vat returns?
The next four dates that apply to vat returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Dayhills clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
