Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Closing a company

Striking off a company is cheap but must be done in order: stop trading, file the final accounts and CT600, pay the tax, close VAT and PAYE, distribute the remaining assets, close the bank account, then apply. Anything left in the company at dissolution passes to the Crown. Distributions up to £25,000 are taxed as capital gains; above that a formal liquidation is usually needed to keep capital treatment.

Switching accountants

The main reasons people switch accountant are surprise invoices, missed deadlines and not understanding what they are being told. Switching involves a clearance letter between the firms, a transfer of records and agent authorisations, and a short handover of the current position. It takes about two weeks and should cost nothing extra.

Allowable expenses

The expenses sole traders most often miss are home working costs, claimed by actual proportion or HMRC's flat rate, the business share of phone and internet, mileage at 45p for the first 10,000 business miles, and training that maintains existing skills. The ones most often claimed wrongly are commuting, entertaining customers and clothes that could be worn outside work.

Record keeping

Good records are the difference between a quick enquiry and a long one. For the self-employed, five years after the filing deadline; for companies, six years from the year end; for VAT, six years. Photographs of receipts, PDF statements and software exports all count. The requirement is to keep records, not paper, and a well-organised cloud folder satisfies it.

The 60-day property CGT return

The 60-day Capital Gains Tax return on residential property is the deadline landlords most often miss, because it falls outside the Self Assessment cycle and runs from completion, not exchange. Private residence relief for periods you lived in the property, plus the final nine months, reduces the gain. Penalties for a late return mirror Self Assessment, starting at £100.

Crypto records and reporting

HMRC treats cryptoassets as property. Swapping one token for another, spending crypto or gifting it are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, and staking and lending rewards are income. Gains are computed under pooling rules with same-day and 30-day matching. From 2026 HMRC receives data from exchanges worldwide under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, so unreported activity is increasingly visible.

The trading and property allowances

Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.

Questions

Locum Accountants questions from Cyprus

I do private work alongside NHS sessions. How is that treated?

Private practice income is self-employment, not pensionable in the NHS scheme, and taxed with your other self-employed income. If the private work is substantial it may suit a limited company while the NHS locum work stays as a sole trader, and we advise on running both structures together.

Can you handle the NHS pension estimate of earnings and the Type 2 form?

Yes. The estimate of pensionable earnings submitted at the start of each year sets your contribution rate; the Type 2 certificate reconciles the actual figures after the year end and is due by the end of February. Both are prepared from the records we keep and submitted on your behalf.

Do locum pharmacists and dentists have the same pension issues?

Dental associates and performers pension their NHS earnings through the dental pension arrangements with annual reconciliation statements; locum pharmacists generally have no NHS pension on locum income. Each profession has its own regime and we handle the specific paperwork for yours.

What is the annual-only option?

For £199 we prepare your Self Assessment from the records you keep yourself, including the reconciliation of your engagement income and pension contributions. It suits locums with a small number of regular engagements who are organised. If records are incomplete, the monthly package is usually better value.

What does the £95 company package include?

Monthly bookkeeping, director payroll with RTI submissions, dividend paperwork, statutory accounts and CT600 filed, the confirmation statement filed (Companies House £50 fee separate), and deadline tracking. Your personal Self Assessment is added at the published £129 where needed, often necessary because of NHS employment income.

What does the £69 sole trader locum package include?

Monthly bookkeeping of all engagement income and expenses, reconciliation of pay statements and remittance advices, NHS pension contribution tracking, a monthly summary with the tax accruing, your Self Assessment with the self-employment and any employment pages prepared and filed, and payments on account calculated.

Is locum accountants in Cyprus really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Cyprus pays and what a client in any other part of England pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Cyprus?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Cyprus and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for locum accountants is the same in Cyprus as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
