VAT returns in Crombie

Four times a year, every VAT-registered business in Crombie owes HMRC a return and a payment by the 7th of the second month after the quarter end. We make sure both are right: input VAT claimed only where it is allowed, output VAT at the correct rate, and the return filed on time. Fixed monthly fee, agreed in writing.

What you get in Crombie

One fixed fee for vat returns in Crombie, agreed in writing before any work starts and never changed part-way through the job, however long it takes us.

Local facts

About Crombie

Crombie is in Scotland, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Auto-enrolment duties begin the day you take on your first employee, not when the Pensions Regulator writes to you. Eligible staff must be enrolled, contributions paid every pay period and re-enrolment carried out every three years. Director-only companies without employment contracts are usually exempt. Fines for non-compliance are fixed and escalating.

Employer National Insurance

The cost of an employee is more than the salary. Employer National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 a year, the 3% minimum pension contribution, holiday pay, equipment and management time all come on top. The Employment Allowance of £10,500 reduces the National Insurance for most employers with more than one person on the payroll.

The trading and property allowances

The first £1,000 of trading income and, separately, the first £1,000 of property income each year is tax free under the trading and property allowances. Below those figures no return is needed for that income. Above them you can deduct the £1,000 allowance instead of actual expenses if that is better, which suits side businesses and single-room lets with few costs.

Dormant companies

Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.

The 60-day property CGT return

Since April 2020 a gain on UK residential property must be reported and the tax paid within 60 days of completion through HMRC's dedicated service, separately from the annual return. Non-residents must report all UK land disposals in the same window whether or not tax is due. Getting the computation right first time matters because the figure is then carried into the Self Assessment.

Crypto records and reporting

Most crypto holders have taxable events they do not recognise, because every swap is a disposal even when no pounds change hands. The computation requires the complete transaction history from every exchange and wallet, pooled by asset with HMRC's matching rules applied. Exchange-generated tax reports are frequently wrong because they cannot see transfers between a user's own wallets.

Allowable expenses

Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.

Questions

VAT Returns questions from Crombie

What if I have made an error on a previous return?

Errors under £10,000, or under 1% of turnover up to £50,000, can be corrected on the next return. Larger errors need a separate disclosure to HMRC on form VAT652. We quantify the error, advise on the right route and prepare the correction, with the fee agreed before we start.

Can I deregister if my turnover falls?

If your taxable turnover will be under £88,000 in the next 12 months you can apply to deregister. You may owe VAT on stock and assets held at the date of deregistration if their value is over £1,000 in VAT terms. We check the numbers and handle the application if it makes sense.

Do I need Making Tax Digital software for VAT?

Yes. All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and submit returns through MTD-compatible software; HMRC's old online form is closed. If you have no software, our bookkeeping service provides it, or the MTD VAT setup package at £129 gets you compliant with your first return filed.

Can you handle a VAT registration from scratch?

Yes. Registration with HMRC is £49, or £79 with scheme advice, and £119 including your first return. We need your business details, turnover figures and bank account. HMRC usually issues the VAT number within two to four weeks, and we tell you how to invoice in the meantime.

When are returns and payments due?

One month and seven days after the end of each VAT quarter, for both the return and the payment. A quarter ending 31 March is due by 7 May. Direct debit payments are taken three working days later. We send you the figure and reference at least a week before the date.

Which VAT scheme should I use?

The standard scheme suits most businesses with significant costs. The flat rate scheme can benefit low-cost service businesses, though the limited-cost trader rate of 16.5% removes most of the advantage. Cash accounting helps with slow-paying customers. We review your figures and recommend one; the £79 registration-plus-advice package includes this.

How do I get started from Crombie?

Message us on WhatsApp or email with a sentence about your business and what you need. We reply in working hours with any questions and a fixed fee for vat returns. Once you confirm, we tell you exactly which records to send and the work begins. Most Crombie clients are set up within a day.

Which deadlines matter most for vat returns?

The next four dates that apply to vat returns are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Crombie clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
