How it works

Sole Trader Accounts from Capel Seion, step by step

  1. Tell us your situation

A short message or call about what you do and what needs filing. We ask the questions that determine the right package and nothing more.

  2. Fixed fee in writing

You receive one price for the work, confirmed by email before anything starts. It does not change if the job takes longer than we expected.

  3. Send records, review the draft

Records come by WhatsApp or email. We prepare the draft, explain the figures in plain English and answer your questions.

  4. We file, you get the receipts

Once you approve and the fee is settled, we submit electronically and forward the HMRC or Companies House acknowledgement the same day.

Why IGI

Why Capel Seion businesses file with IGI

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Capel Seion clients know the fee for sole trader accounts before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Capel Seion get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to sole trader accounts.

We serve Capel Seion remotely by design: records by WhatsApp or email, drafts back for approval, filing electronic. The saving on premises is passed to you in the fee for sole trader accounts.

A named person handles your sole trader accounts from Capel Seion and knows the file, so you are not re-explaining your business to a different helpdesk each time.

Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Capel Seion comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.

You stay in control of sole trader accounts: drafts go to Capel Seion clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Late filing penalties

Penalties are the clearest reason to work to deadlines. A Self Assessment return one day late costs £100 regardless of whether any tax is due; three months late adds £10 a day. Late company accounts start at £150 and reach £1,500, and double if the previous year was also late. None of this is negotiable afterwards except through a narrow reasonable-excuse appeal.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, extends to those over £30,000 in April 2027 and is planned for £20,000 in April 2028. It requires digital records in compatible software and four quarterly updates to HMRC each year, with a final declaration replacing the traditional return. Payment dates are unchanged.

The Self Assessment calendar

Self Assessment runs on a fixed annual cycle. Registration by 5 October following the tax year, online filing and payment by 31 January, and a second instalment on 31 July for those making payments on account. The penalties for lateness are automatic and escalate monthly, which is why we file early and chase approvals well before the window closes.

Payments on account

A common surprise in Self Assessment is the January payment that is far larger than expected. That is the balancing payment for the year just ended plus the first payment on account for the year ahead, which HMRC sets at half of the bill just calculated. We put the figure in your hands months ahead and tell you how to adjust it legitimately when circumstances change.

Salary versus dividends

Directors of their own companies usually take a salary at or just above the National Insurance thresholds, which keeps the year qualifying for State Pension and is deductible for Corporation Tax, with further income as dividends. Dividends above the £500 allowance are taxed at 10.75%, 35.75% and 39.35% by band and can only be paid from distributable profits after tax, with a minute and voucher each time.

Director's loan accounts

The most common tax problem in owner-managed companies is an overdrawn director's loan account: drawings taken during the year that were never declared as dividends or salary. The company faces a 35.75% charge on the balance outstanding nine months after the year end, and the director may have a benefit in kind. We review the account before every year end to clear it properly.

Switching accountants

Changing accountant is simpler than most people fear. You authorise the new firm, which writes to the old one for professional clearance and your records; the outgoing accountant must hand over your own documents and usually does within two weeks. The new firm registers as your agent with HMRC and picks up the next filing. There is no need to wait for a year end.

Questions

Sole Trader Accounts questions from Capel Seion

I started trading part-way through the year. What is my first accounting period?

Since the basis period reform, sole traders are taxed on profits of the tax year, 6 April to 5 April, regardless of accounting date. A first period runs from your start date to 5 April. If you prefer a different accounting date we apportion the profits, but for most new traders a 5 April year end is simplest.

Should I become a limited company?

It depends on profit level, how much you need to draw, liability exposure and whether you want to retain profits. At modest profits the saving is small after the extra compliance cost; at higher profits incorporation can help. Our free comparison tool gives a first view and the tax planning review gives a definitive one.

When does Making Tax Digital apply to me?

From April 2026 if your combined self-employment and property income was over £50,000 in 2024/25; from April 2027 if over £30,000; and planned for April 2028 if over £20,000. It means digital records and quarterly updates to HMRC. Our bookkeeping service handles it, and we tell you your start date as part of the accounts work.

What records do I have to keep?

Records of all sales and takings, all purchases and expenses, and bank statements, for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the relevant tax year. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software from your start date.

How are vehicles treated?

You can claim actual running costs with a business-use percentage plus capital allowances on the vehicle, or HMRC's simplified mileage rate of 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p after that. Once you choose a method for a vehicle you keep it. We compare both for your mileage and show the difference.

What National Insurance do sole traders pay?

Class 4 at 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above that, collected through Self Assessment. Class 2 is no longer compulsory; profits above £7,105 earn National Insurance credits automatically, and below that you can pay Class 2 voluntarily at £3.65 a week to protect your State Pension record.

Do you have an office in Capel Seion?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Capel Seion and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for sole trader accounts is the same in Capel Seion as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.

Is sole trader accounts in Capel Seion really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Capel Seion pays and what a client in any other part of Wales pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
