Once you approve and the fee is settled, we submit electronically and forward the HMRC or Companies House acknowledgement the same day.
Why IGI
The IGI way of working, in Canons
No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Canons clients know the fee for crypto tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.
We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Canons get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to crypto tax.
Online only, UK based. There is no office in Canons to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.
Continuity matters in crypto tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Canons business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Canons comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.
You stay in control of crypto tax: drafts go to Canons clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
Dormant companies
Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.
The trading and property allowances
Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.
Employer National Insurance
Since April 2025 employer National Insurance has been 15% on earnings above a £5,000 secondary threshold, a substantial increase for small employers. The Employment Allowance rose to £10,500 at the same time to soften it for the smallest businesses. Directors deciding their own salary weigh this cost against the Corporation Tax deduction a salary provides.
Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment
Workplace pension compliance is part of payroll, not separate from it. Each pay period the payroll assesses who is eligible, calculates employer and employee contributions on qualifying earnings between the lower and upper thresholds, and sends the contribution file to the scheme. The minimum total is 8%, and many employers choose to contribute more as a recruitment advantage.
Record keeping
HMRC requires records of all income and expenses, bank statements, invoices and receipts to be kept for at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline of the tax year they relate to, and companies must keep records for six years from the end of the accounting period. Digital copies are acceptable. Under Making Tax Digital the records must be kept in compatible software.
Allowable expenses
Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.
Crypto records and reporting
HMRC treats cryptoassets as property. Swapping one token for another, spending crypto or gifting it are all disposals for Capital Gains Tax, and staking and lending rewards are income. Gains are computed under pooling rules with same-day and 30-day matching. From 2026 HMRC receives data from exchanges worldwide under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, so unreported activity is increasingly visible.
Questions
Crypto Tax questions from Canons
Do I need to register for Self Assessment just for crypto?
If your total disposals exceed £50,000 in the year, or your gains exceed the £3,000 allowance, or you have taxable crypto income, yes. Register by 5 October after the tax year. Since 2024/25 the return has a dedicated section for cryptoassets. We handle registration where you are not already filing.
Are NFTs treated the same as coins?
Each NFT is a separate asset, so pooling does not apply; the gain is proceeds less the cost of that specific token including gas fees. Creating and selling NFTs regularly may be trading income rather than capital gains. Royalties received are income. We classify each case from the facts.
My exchange collapsed and I lost everything. Can I claim the loss?
Possibly. If the tokens still exist but you cannot access them, a negligible value claim may be available once the asset is effectively worthless. If the exchange is in administration you may need to wait for the outcome. We assess each case against HMRC's guidance and make the claim where it is supportable.
What do you need from me?
Full transaction exports from every exchange you have used, including closed accounts, and wallet addresses for on-chain activity. Partial history produces wrong pool costs, so completeness matters more than tidiness. We tell you exactly how to export from each major platform.
How is the fee set?
By transaction count. Up to 500 transactions across all exchanges and wallets is £199 for the report alone or £279 with your Self Assessment filed. Over 500 is £399. A response to an HMRC nudge letter, including the report and the reply, is £249. We confirm the band from your exports before starting.
I received an HMRC letter about crypto. What should I do?
Do not ignore it and do not reply without the figures. HMRC's nudge letters are sent where exchange data suggests undeclared activity. We prepare the full report, work out what should have been declared, and draft the response, including a voluntary disclosure where tax is owed, which reduces penalties substantially compared with being caught.
Which deadlines matter most for crypto tax?
The next four dates that apply to crypto tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Canons clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
