Why IGI
Why Burnley businesses file with IGI
The price for freelancer accountants is published on this page and is what a client in Burnley pays. We confirm it in writing first, and the invoice matches the quote.
Nothing for Burnley is left to the last week. Each deadline relevant to freelancer accountants is tracked from the day you join, with the next four shown on every page we send you.
Online only, UK based. There is no office in Burnley to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.
Continuity matters in freelancer accountants: the person who prepared last year's work for your Burnley business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.
Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Burnley comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.
Approval before filing is a rule, not a courtesy. For freelancer accountants in Burnley, every submission to HMRC or Companies House follows your written go-ahead.
Local facts
About Burnley
Burnley is in North West, in the BB11 postcode district, England. For businesses in England the tax rules are those set by the UK Parliament: the 20/40/45% income tax bands, Class 4 National Insurance for the self-employed at 6% and 2%, Corporation Tax at 19% to 25%, and Stamp Duty Land Tax on property. Business rates are set locally by the council.

Worth knowing
Rules that come up in this work
The trading and property allowances
Small side incomes are covered by two £1,000 allowances, one for trading and one for property, which remove the need to register or report income below that level. Once income exceeds £1,000, the allowance can be used in place of expenses, a choice worth making deliberately: a freelancer with £900 of costs is better off with the allowance, one with £3,000 is not.
Dormant companies
Companies formed to protect a name or hold a future business are dormant but not exempt: Companies House still expects dormant accounts within nine months of the year end and a confirmation statement annually with its £50 fee, and HMRC must be told the company is dormant or it will demand Corporation Tax returns. The filings are short, but the penalties for missing them are the same as for a trading company.
Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment
Every employer must assess its workers for automatic enrolment from the first employee's start date. Those aged 22 to State Pension age earning over £10,000 a year must be enrolled into a qualifying pension with minimum contributions of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% from the employer, and a declaration of compliance made to the Pensions Regulator within five months.
Employer National Insurance
Employers pay National Insurance at 15% on each employee's earnings above the £5,000 secondary threshold, following the April 2025 changes. The Employment Allowance offsets up to £10,500 of this for eligible employers, which for a small team often removes the liability entirely, but companies where the director is the only employee do not qualify.
Allowable expenses
Expense claims are where a return is won or lost in an enquiry. The test is wholly and exclusively for the trade; where a cost is mixed, the business proportion can be claimed if it can be identified. Capital items such as equipment and vans are relieved through capital allowances rather than as expenses, except under the cash basis where they are simply deducted when paid.
Record keeping
Good records are the difference between a quick enquiry and a long one. For the self-employed, five years after the filing deadline; for companies, six years from the year end; for VAT, six years. Photographs of receipts, PDF statements and software exports all count. The requirement is to keep records, not paper, and a well-organised cloud folder satisfies it.
The 60-day property CGT return
Selling UK residential property that was not your main home for the whole period of ownership triggers a separate Capital Gains Tax return, due within 60 days of completion along with payment of the tax. This is in addition to the annual Self Assessment. The gain is taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income band, after the £3,000 annual exempt amount.
Questions
Freelancer Accountants questions from Burnley
How do you handle irregular and overseas income?
Irregular income is normal for freelancers and the monthly summary shows the year-to-date position so lean months are planned for. Overseas clients are invoiced without UK VAT in most cases, and any foreign tax withheld can usually be credited against your UK liability. Both are handled within the package.
Do I need to register for VAT?
Only when your taxable turnover in any rolling 12 months exceeds £90,000, or voluntarily before that. Many freelancers with business clients register voluntarily to reclaim VAT on equipment; those with consumer clients usually wait. We monitor your rolling turnover and advise before the threshold is reached.
Does Making Tax Digital apply to freelancers?
If your gross self-employment plus property income was over £50,000 in 2024/25 you joined MTD for Income Tax in April 2026; over £30,000 means April 2027; over £20,000 is planned for April 2028. It means digital records and quarterly updates. Our monthly package keeps the records in the right form and submits the updates.
What is the starter session?
A £99 video call before or soon after you go freelance, covering the sole trader versus company decision, registration with HMRC, how to price so that tax is covered, what records to keep and how, invoicing and payment terms, and the dates that matter. You come away with a written plan. If you then join a monthly package the £99 is credited.
What expenses can freelancers claim?
A proportion of home costs for the space and hours you work there, or HMRC's flat rate; equipment and software; professional subscriptions and insurance; training that maintains existing skills; business travel other than commuting; marketing and website costs; bank charges; and the business share of phone and internet. We review your categories every month.
How much should I set aside for tax?
For a sole trader, roughly 20% to 30% of profit covers income tax and Class 4 National Insurance at basic rate, more at higher rate, plus payments on account in the first year they apply. We give you a specific monthly figure based on your actual profit each month, which is more useful than a rule of thumb.
Is freelancer accountants in Burnley really the same price as elsewhere?
Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Burnley pays and what a client in any other part of England pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.
Do you have an office in Burnley?
No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Burnley and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for freelancer accountants is the same in Burnley as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
