Why IGI

What you get in Adforton

No hourly rate and no surprise invoice. Adforton clients know the fee for corporation tax before they send a single document, and it stays fixed.

We work to the HMRC and Companies House calendar, not an appointment diary. Clients in Adforton get reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before each date that applies to corporation tax.

Online only, UK based. There is no office in Adforton to pay for, which is why the fee is the same here as anywhere in England; the work is done by people in the UK who answer the same day.

Continuity matters in corporation tax: the person who prepared last year's work for your Adforton business prepares this year's, and remembers what was agreed.

Plain English, with the numbers. Every draft for Adforton comes with a short explanation of what the figures mean and what, if anything, you should do about them.

You stay in control of corporation tax: drafts go to Adforton clients first, with the figures explained, and nothing leaves us until you say so.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Dormant companies

A dormant company is one with no significant accounting transactions in the year, where the only permitted entries are the payment for shares on incorporation, Companies House fees and penalties. It still files a confirmation statement and simplified dormant accounts every year. A bank charge or an accountant's fee paid from the company ends dormancy and requires full accounts.

The trading and property allowances

Not every small income needs a tax return. The trading allowance exempts the first £1,000 of self-employment or casual income and the property allowance does the same for rental income, each measured on gross receipts. They cannot be combined with rent-a-room relief on the same income, and claiming the allowance means giving up the expense deduction for that source.

Employer National Insurance

Employers pay National Insurance at 15% on each employee's earnings above the £5,000 secondary threshold, following the April 2025 changes. The Employment Allowance offsets up to £10,500 of this for eligible employers, which for a small team often removes the liability entirely, but companies where the director is the only employee do not qualify.

Workplace pensions and auto-enrolment

Every employer must assess its workers for automatic enrolment from the first employee's start date. Those aged 22 to State Pension age earning over £10,000 a year must be enrolled into a qualifying pension with minimum contributions of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% from the employer, and a declaration of compliance made to the Pensions Regulator within five months.

Record keeping

Good records are the difference between a quick enquiry and a long one. For the self-employed, five years after the filing deadline; for companies, six years from the year end; for VAT, six years. Photographs of receipts, PDF statements and software exports all count. The requirement is to keep records, not paper, and a well-organised cloud folder satisfies it.

Allowable expenses

The expenses sole traders most often miss are home working costs, claimed by actual proportion or HMRC's flat rate, the business share of phone and internet, mileage at 45p for the first 10,000 business miles, and training that maintains existing skills. The ones most often claimed wrongly are commuting, entertaining customers and clothes that could be worn outside work.

Crypto records and reporting

Most crypto holders have taxable events they do not recognise, because every swap is a disposal even when no pounds change hands. The computation requires the complete transaction history from every exchange and wallet, pooled by asset with HMRC's matching rules applied. Exchange-generated tax reports are frequently wrong because they cannot see transfers between a user's own wallets.

Questions

Corporation Tax questions from Adforton

What is iXBRL and do I need to worry about it?

HMRC requires the accounts and computation attached to a CT600 to be tagged in iXBRL, a machine-readable format. We produce and validate the tagged files as part of the service. If another firm prepared your accounts we tag their figures; you never deal with it directly.

My CT600 is overdue. What now?

The £279 rescue fee gets it prepared and filed quickly from your accounts. The £100 late penalty is fixed, rising to £200 after three months and then to tax-geared penalties at six and twelve months, so speed matters. If there is a reasonable excuse we draft the appeal as part of the fee.

My company made a loss. What can be done with it?

A trading loss can be set against the company's other profits of the same year, carried back one year for a repayment of tax already paid, or carried forward against future profits. The right choice depends on cash flow and expected profits. We model the options and make the claim on the return.

What are associated companies and why do they matter?

Companies under common control count as associated, and the £50,000 and £250,000 thresholds are divided between them. A director who owns two companies has thresholds of £25,000 and £125,000 for each. Missing this is a common error that produces an underpayment and interest.

Are dividends and salary treated differently for Corporation Tax?

Yes. Salary, employer National Insurance and employer pension contributions are deductible expenses that reduce taxable profit. Dividends are paid from profit after tax and are not deductible. This asymmetry is central to the salary-versus-dividend planning we do for directors.

What expenses are not allowed for Corporation Tax?

Business entertainment of customers, most fines and penalties, depreciation (replaced by capital allowances), general provisions, and the private element of mixed-use costs. Legal fees on capital items are also disallowed. The computation adds these back to accounting profit and we list every adjustment so you can see the effect.

Which deadlines matter most for corporation tax?

The next four dates that apply to corporation tax are shown at the top of this page, calculated from today. For Adforton clients we diarise every one of them from the day you join and send reminders before each, so the work is done in good time rather than in the last week before a penalty.
