About Abune-the-Hill

Abune-the-Hill is in Scotland, Scotland. Tax in Scotland differs from the rest of the UK on earned income: six bands with a 21% intermediate rate and a 48% top rate, identified by an S prefix on the tax code. The interaction between Scottish rates on salary and UK rates on dividends makes the salary-and-dividend split for Scottish directors a distinct calculation, and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces Stamp Duty.

Worth knowing

Rules that come up in this work

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, extends to those over £30,000 in April 2027 and is planned for £20,000 in April 2028. It requires digital records in compatible software and four quarterly updates to HMRC each year, with a final declaration replacing the traditional return. Payment dates are unchanged.

Late filing penalties

Penalties are the clearest reason to work to deadlines. A Self Assessment return one day late costs £100 regardless of whether any tax is due; three months late adds £10 a day. Late company accounts start at £150 and reach £1,500, and double if the previous year was also late. None of this is negotiable afterwards except through a narrow reasonable-excuse appeal.

Payments on account

Payments on account catch out most people in their second year of self-employment. HMRC assumes next year's tax will match this year's and collects half in January and half in July, in advance, on top of the balancing payment. If profits are dropping you can apply to reduce them, but reducing them too far attracts interest. We calculate the right figure rather than guessing.

The Self Assessment calendar

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Anyone new to Self Assessment must register by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which their untaxed income began. The online return and the balancing payment are due by 31 January, with a second payment on account on 31 July where they apply. Paper returns have an earlier deadline of 31 October and are rarely sensible.

Director's loan accounts

The most common tax problem in owner-managed companies is an overdrawn director's loan account: drawings taken during the year that were never declared as dividends or salary. The company faces a 35.75% charge on the balance outstanding nine months after the year end, and the director may have a benefit in kind. We review the account before every year end to clear it properly.

Salary versus dividends

Paying yourself from a company involves two routes with different tax treatment. Salary through payroll is a company expense and builds a National Insurance record; dividends come from post-tax profit at lower personal rates. Undocumented drawings that are neither become director's loans, with a 35.75% section 455 charge if not repaid within nine months of the year end.

Corporation Tax rates and marginal relief

Corporation Tax is not a flat rate. Profits to £50,000 pay 19%, profits above £250,000 pay 25%, and the band between is taxed at an effective marginal rate of 26.5% through the marginal relief mechanism. Associated companies share the thresholds, which catches directors who own more than one company and is the most common cause of underpaid tax in owner-managed groups.

Questions

VAT Returns questions from Abune-the-Hill

Do I need Making Tax Digital software for VAT?

Yes. All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and submit returns through MTD-compatible software; HMRC's old online form is closed. If you have no software, our bookkeeping service provides it, or the MTD VAT setup package at £129 gets you compliant with your first return filed.

Can you handle a VAT registration from scratch?

Yes. Registration with HMRC is £49, or £79 with scheme advice, and £119 including your first return. We need your business details, turnover figures and bank account. HMRC usually issues the VAT number within two to four weeks, and we tell you how to invoice in the meantime.

Can I claim VAT on everything the business buys?

Only on purchases used for making taxable supplies, with a valid VAT invoice. Business entertainment, most cars and anything with private use are restricted or blocked. If you make some exempt supplies, partial exemption rules limit recovery. We check these before each return.

What if I have made an error on a previous return?

Errors under £10,000, or under 1% of turnover up to £50,000, can be corrected on the next return. Larger errors need a separate disclosure to HMRC on form VAT652. We quantify the error, advise on the right route and prepare the correction, with the fee agreed before we start.

What happens if a return is late?

HMRC's points-based system gives one penalty point per late return; at four points (for quarterly filers) each further late return costs £200. Late payment penalties start at 3% of the tax after 15 days, with daily interest from day one. We file on time if we have your records; late-filer rescues are £99 per return.

Can I deregister if my turnover falls?

If your taxable turnover will be under £88,000 in the next 12 months you can apply to deregister. You may owe VAT on stock and assets held at the date of deregistration if their value is over £1,000 in VAT terms. We check the numbers and handle the application if it makes sense.

Is vat returns in Abune-the-Hill really the same price as elsewhere?

Yes. The fee published on this page is what a client in Abune-the-Hill pays and what a client in any other part of Scotland pays. It is confirmed in writing before work starts and the invoice matches the quote. Where a higher package applies because your situation is more complex, we say so at the quote stage, never afterwards.

Do you have an office in Abune-the-Hill?

No. IGI Accounting is an online-only firm. We serve Abune-the-Hill and every other UK postcode remotely, with records sent by WhatsApp or email and everything filed electronically. The absence of local premises is why the fee for vat returns is the same in Abune-the-Hill as anywhere else in the country, and why there is nothing to visit and nothing to print.
